Film footage captured by a news crew reveals a harrowing story of an immigrant man who tragically kills his wife and son before taking his own life. In a shocking turn of events, his wife and son reanimate as zombies, unleashing chaos as they attack medical personnel and police officers. Amid the carnage, a lone medic and reporter are bitten but manage to survive the ordeal. The narrator, Debra, explains that much of this footage, recorded by the cameraman, was never aired, leaving viewers to contemplate the horrors that unfold.

Meanwhile, a group of film studies students at the University of Pittsburgh embarks on a project in the woods, guided by their faculty advisor, Andrew Maxwell. As they work on their horror film, disturbing news of mass rioting and murder reaches them. Distressed by the situation, two students, Ridley and Francine, choose to leave the group, prompting the remaining members, including Jason and Debra, to head to Scranton, Pennsylvania, in search of safety. On their way, they tragically collide with a reanimated Pennsylvania State Trooper and several other zombies, leading to a tense series of events that tests their resolve.

As tensions rise, Mary, a member of their group, attempts suicide only to be taken to a hospital that becomes overrun with the undead. The survivors must band together to fend off the growing zombie threat. Not long after, Mary succumbs to the infection, leading Maxwell to make the grim decision to eliminate her. The group finds themselves caught in a fight for survival, needing to escape from the hospital while dealing with reanimated patients and ruthless zombies. Along the way, one of their own, Gordo, falls victim to a zombie bite, and his girlfriend, Tracy, is forced to confront the heartbreaking decision to end his life post-reanimation.

Their journey grows increasingly perilous as they encounter formidable challenges, including a breakdown of their RV in a zombie-infested area. A deaf Amish man named Samuel comes to their rescue, but not before sacrificing himself after a fierce encounter. The group presses on, eventually reaching a fortified compound run by survivors, including a member of the National Guard. Here, Jason uploads his footage, and the group hopes for good news, receiving a message from Debra’s brother about their family’s whereabouts amidst the chaos.

The situation escalates further upon their arrival at Debra’s house, where they are met with the terrifying sight of her reanimated family. Maxwell swiftly takes action, but their respite is short-lived, as they face the betrayal of National Guardsmen who rob them of their supplies. In a twist of fate, they seek refuge at Ridley’s mansion, only to discover the gruesome fate that befell his family. Ridley, who reveals his odd behavior as a result of being bitten, ultimately succumbs to the infection, leading to more deaths within the group.

As the chaos unfolds, Debra grapples with the desire to document the horror while struggling to maintain her humanity. The survivors barricade themselves in a panic room as the mansion is besieged by an overwhelming horde of zombies, including Ridley. In a heart-wrenching conclusion, Debra faces the heavy burden of euthanizing Jason, her determination to record their struggle never wavering, even as she contemplates the moral implications of their actions. Watching footage of a brutal hunt where humans are used as targets, she is left to ponder the question: Is the human race truly worth saving?
