For his 17th birthday, Skylar embarks on a hunting trip for deer alongside his brother Nate. However, the specifics of their quarry remain unclear, and uncertainty looms over what they are truly aiming for. In the backdrop of Guerneville, California, a shadow is cast over the boys' celebration as news breaks about the death of Dick Cavanaugh, the town's mayor.

In the aftermath of this tragic event, the brothers strive to do the right thing. Their father, Bloom, serves as the police chief, providing a glimmer of hope that Skylar might avoid severe repercussions. It is determined that the incident was indeed an accident; nevertheless, the wheels of justice are already in motion.

Among those in law enforcement is Lloyd, a local officer whose approach to his duties resembles that of a bumbling Barney Fife. Despite his mishaps, he seems sympathetic towards the boys, complicating the situation further. The Cavanaugh family's influence looms large in the community, with their name dominating local businesses. This connection casts suspicion on Skylar, who now faces the grim reality of being tried as an adult, especially given the perceived motive behind the incident. As deputies attempt to escort him to Santa Rosa, a new set of challenges arises, thanks to Nate's determination to intervene.

As fate would have it, their survivalist uncle, Mike, enters the fray—agitated and mourning Sarah's death. While details about Sarah are gradually unveiled throughout the story, her loss adds another layer of complexity to the boys' struggles. With an impending flight from the law, Nate and Skylar initially find themselves with a measure of liberty. Their pursuers, including Tony and Joel, are portrayed as incompetent—enthusiasts of firearms who see justice through a lethal lens rather than due process.

However, not all of their pursuers are foolish. Randy stands as a competent officer leading the search, projecting an aura similar to that of a drill sergeant.
