In the opulent streets of pre-Revolution Paris, the Marquise de Merteuil plots revenge against her former lover, the Comte de Bastide. Angered by being cast aside, she meticulously orchestrates a plan to target his naïve fiancée, Cécile de Volanges.

To carry out her scheme, Merteuil seeks the assistance of Vicomte de Valmont, a charming yet cunning former lover. Valmont initially pursues Madame de Tourvel but agrees to Merteuil's challenge to ruin Cécile's reputation as a means of winning Merteuil's affections.

Valmont starts to manipulate Cécile's life, trying to entrap her into his web of deceit. He employs his page, Azolan, to seduce Cécile's maid, Julie, to gain access to the private correspondence of Madame de Volanges, Cécile's mother.

Discovering letters that warn against his character infuriates Valmont. Feeling insulted, Valmont shifts his focus from Cécile's maid to Cécile herself, vowing to seduce her directly and reclaim his status.
