As the rain-drenched streets of Santa Barbara, California plunge into darkness, Richard Bone finds himself stranded on an isolated side road. The eerie stillness is abruptly broken by the arrival of an elegant vehicle, from which the occupant casually tosses an object into a nearby trash can. Initially perceived as a simple act, this moment takes a sinister turn when, the next day, the lifeless body of a young girl is discovered among the refuse, ensnaring Bone in a perplexing murder investigation.

Amidst the swirling storm of accusations and suspicion, Bone’s friend Alex Cutter, a Vietnam veteran with a sharp sense of paranoia, begins to untangle the complex conspiracy that lurks beneath the surface. Driven by his belief that the affluent tycoon J.J. Cord is entangled in the girl’s murder, Cutter’s claims ignite a series of precarious events that draw Bone, Cutter, and the deceased girl’s sister into a dangerous game of cat and mouse.

The stakes escalate when Cutter attempts to extract a confession from Cord, leading to a catastrophic fire at his home that tragically claims the life of his wife, Mo. Convinced that Cord will stop at nothing to silence him, Cutter is determined to reveal the truth. He cunningly acquires an invitation to an elite soirée at Cord’s opulent mansion and recruits Bone to drive him there for the evening.

As they navigate the world of clinking champagne glasses and polished smiles, Cutter reveals his scheme to bring down Cord—a strategy that Bone desperately seeks to undermine. However, when they become cornered between parked cars and tightening security, with Cutter’s erratic behavior escalating, Bone must confront the malevolent realities lurking in their seemingly tranquil town.

The night culminates in a heart-stopping confrontation within Cord’s office, where Bone stands face-to-face with his calculated adversary. As Cutter lies gravely injured, his mind shattered by the glass shards that litter the floor, Bone delivers a blunt accusation: Cord is culpable for the heinous murder. Cord’s chilling response, > “What if it were?” sends a jolt through Bone as he steadies Cutter’s gun and fires a fatal shot. With the screen fading into darkness, the ramifications of their choices linger, forcing the audience to ponder the ultimate price of justice.
