Tommy Akhtar, the son of Ugandan immigrants, works as a street-level investigator and snoop in London, moving through the city’s shadows to uncover secrets that others keep hidden. Melody Chase comes to him with a desperate request: find her missing roommate, Natasha, a Russian prostitute who vanished under troubling circumstances. Tommy’s method is quick and messy—he nicks a keycard from the hotel’s cleaning staff and crawls into the last room Natasha was seen in, only to discover the lifeless body of Usman Rana, a British Pakistani businessman. He pockets the dead man’s mobile phone as evidence, then phones in an anonymous tip about the murder from a payphone at a bar, hoping to stir a distant investigation.
The plot thickens as a young weed dealer, Avid Elbaz, helps crack the phone’s PIN, drawing Tommy into a web of shifting loyalties. Avid’s mother has asked Tommy to steer him away from trouble, but the boy’s trouble is already pulling Tommy deeper into danger. Two calls from the phone connect to Hafiz “Lovely” Ansari, a childhood friend of Tommy’s, who asks him to dig further because the murder is scaring off potential investors. The trail leads Tommy to Hafiz’s home, where he learns that the case has wider implications than a single homicide.
When Tommy speaks with a police contact, he learns the hotel room was cleaned up and the place swarmed with SO15, suggesting a high level of sensitivity around the case. The recovered SIM card reveals a spreadsheet detailing large donations to the Islamic Youth League, a discovery that pulls Tommy into a controversial orbit. He tracks the organization to its center and is photographed by SO15 as he moves through their circle. A federal agent from the United States approaches him in a bar later, confirming that the authorities are watching and warning him to stay away from the investigation.
Tommy then presses further, speaking with Tunde, who works at Natasha’s club the night she disappeared. Tunde fills in a critical detail: Melody was with one of her regular clients that night, and Hafiz’s name surfaces again. A violent interruption interrupts their conversation as two strangers, shouting that the case is closed, assault Tommy and fade into the noise of the city. Undeterred, Tommy begins sending Avid Elbaz into the Islamic Youth League’s orbit to gather information.
The danger escalates when Tommy is abducted in a black van and taken to a federal agent who shows him a video of Usman calling for jihad. The agent then escorts him to a crime scene where the freshly discovered body of Natasha is found. Back with Melody, she admits she is being followed and confesses that her last client was Hafiz. As they attempt to leave, a stranger opens fire in the hotel’s elevator, forcing a frantic escape.
They retreat to Tommy’s father’s house, where a careful examination of the spreadsheet reveals a pattern: substantial profits from property acquisitions bought at depressed prices. The next day, the leader of the Islamic Youth League, Al-Dabaran, is arrested, triggering protests from his followers. Hafiz tries to quiet the growing unrest, while Tommy warns him that others connected to the night’s events are being targeted. When Avid is attacked by American federal agents and falls into a coma, Avid’s mother blames Tommy for pulling him into the web.
At home again, Tommy finds Hafiz and another man holding Melody at gunpoint. Hafiz admits to manipulating drug dealers to push property prices down, then allowing the League to seize these areas and buy up the land at a fraction of its value. Tommy’s father returns and shoots the gunman, but Tommy manages to intervene and persuade his father not to shoot Hafiz as well. Hafiz is eventually arrested, and peace feels fragile but real.
In the final moments, Tommy returns to the quiet of his own home and shares a meal with his father, Melody, Avid, Shelley, and Emma. The city’s murmur continues, but the immediate danger has passed, leaving a wary sense of closure and the sense that the truth, however messy, has finally started to surface.
