Cottage Country

Todd wants everything to be perfect at the family cottage and plans to propose to Cammie. He envisions a flawless weekend filled with happiness. The arrival of his slacker brother Salinger and his free-spirited girlfriend Masha immediately unsettles him.

Salinger and Masha show up unannounced, throwing Todd's plans into chaos. Tensions rise as their presence clashes with Todd's desire for a quiet, perfect weekend. The dynamic among the group becomes strained from the start.

During a confrontation, Todd loses control and kills Salinger with an axe. The act shatters the weekend and forces Todd to consider a cover-up. Guilt and fear push him toward drastic measures.

Todd confesses the killing to Cammie, and the couple decides they must remove Masha to protect their future. They hatch a plan to murder Masha and keep their engagement intact. The plan marks a turning point toward deadly consequences.

Masha is in the kitchen cooking mushrooms when Todd moves to strike. Cammie knocks her out with a frying pan, and Masha has a seizure. They cover her face with a tarp and kill her, sealing their grim decision with violence.

Todd and Cammie chop up the bodies and dispose of them in the lake on their way to the island. The murder investigation silently closes in as they flee the scene. Their path to a better future is paved with crime.

At the island, Todd proposes to Cammie and she says yes, cementing their dangerous alliance. The moment is marred by their hidden sins, but they cling to the idea of a shared life together. The balance of their relationship appears secure for the moment.

On the way back to the mainland, they learn Salinger has invited many people to the cottage for a party. The sudden influx of guests brings scrutiny and exposure to their secret. The façade of domestic bliss begins to crack.

During the party, a friend grows suspicious about Masha's disappearance and confronts Cammie. Todd becomes visibly nervous as the conversation unfolds, and the friend notices a troubling cut above Todd's head.

Todd's timeline starts to unravel under pressure, and he contemplates turning himself in. Cammie, determined to protect their future, frames another for Salinger and Masha's deaths to keep them both out of trouble.

Todd decides to go to the police to confess his crimes, and Cammie races after him in a bid to stop him from exposing them. The pursuit escalates into a tense, dangerous confrontation.

A female officer shoots Cammie through the windshield, and Todd braces for the worst. Cammie, wounded and desperate, retrieves the officer's gun and shoots Todd, dying soon after in a final, bitter act. Todd's fate hangs in the balance as the moment closes.

The film jumps forward one year. Todd, now in a wheelchair, is wheeled onto the cottage dock by his father. Surgical scars on his head reveal severe brain injury and memory loss as he repeats questions about his family, illustrating the lasting cost of the weekend's violence.
