What Happens in Code 8: Part II: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Code 8: Part II (2024) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Five years after the events of Code 8, the LCPD has revamped their militarized technology program, swapping out the majority of their armed humanoid robots, known as Guardians, for friendly non-lethal K9 robots that resemble dogs. Under the guidance of Sergeant Kingston (Alex Mallari Jr.), this initiative has been remarkably successful, contributing to a significant decline in crime rates throughout the city. Riding on the wave of this achievement, Kingston is now campaigning for Mayor.

Over 200 K9 units have been deployed across the urban landscape, with Kingston asserting that these robotic companions are programmed to avoid harming humans and will stand down once a human presents no further threat. Yet, alongside this impressive progress, lies a troubling reality: 4% of the population possesses special abilities, somewhat akin to mutants, most of whom are marginalized and live below the poverty line under intense police scrutiny. While their extraordinary powers once helped shape cities, the advent of robots has turned these abilities into perceived threats, pushing these individuals to the fringes of society.

The drug Psyke, harvested from the spinal fluid of those with powers, highlights the exploitation of this vulnerable group. Recently released from prison, Connor (Robbie Amell) has taken up a job as a janitor at a youth community center led by Mina (Jean Yoon). He wants to leave his troubled past behind and avoid any conflict, even spurning visits from Garrett (Stephen Amell), who comes to fetch him from prison. Meanwhile, Detective Davis (Aaron Abrams) is eager to enlist Connor’s help to locate Garrett.

Garrett has established control over a dilapidated apartment complex called Towers; here, he operates a "ethical" drug business, compensating individuals with powers for their spinal fluid to produce Psyke. Among those struggling within this community are Pavani (Sirena Gulamgaus) and her older brother Tarak. Tarak, striving to support Pavani’s education, finds himself entangled in Garrett's drug trade but struggles to secure a living wage. When desperation drives Tarak to swipe a bag of cash from Garrett’s operation, he is caught red-handed by Sgt. King and his corrupt officers, who are on Garrett's payroll.

In a tragic twist, King discovers Tarak with the stolen money, leading to his frantic attempt to escape. To cover the incident, King commands a K9 unit to eliminate him, framing it to appear as an overdose due to Psyke. Witnessing this atrocity, Pavani uses her unique abilities to disable the K9, ultimately escaping the horror.

Taking refuge at the community center, Pavani finds safety with Connor and Mina. However, surveillance footage captures their getaway, prompting King to inform Garrett that Pavani poses a threat and must be silenced, as she could expose them. When King launches an all-out assault on Connor's location with Guardian drones and K9s, the trio uses their abilities to flee.

In a desperate attempt to broker peace, Connor approaches Garrett, discovering that Pavani, as a Transducer, inadvertently interrupted a key exchange between Garrett and King. Connor proposes wiping the traumatic memory of her brother's murder from Pavani’s mind, yet upon realizing this erasure would obliterate all her memories of him, he races against time to rescue her.

Turning to Mina, they attempt to escape the city together, but are ambushed by Garrett and his crew. In a nail-biting standoff between Connor and Garrett, the latter hesitates to harm Connor as he stands protectively in front of Pavani. With drones watching their every move, Sgt. King unleashes the Guardians, ordering an indiscriminate attack on the group. Mina's selfless act of sacrifice provides Connor, Pavani, and Garrett the chance to escape.

They find asylum in Garrett's off-grid safe house, but Detective Davis eventually tracks them down, revealing that the only path to bringing King to justice is by infiltrating his home and stealing a K9 unit. Pavani uses her abilities to access the K9, ensuring it goes to sleep, which holds irrefutable evidence of Tarak's murder in its memory.

It's unveiled that King harbors his own mutant powers, concealing them to maintain his authority within society. After acquiring the K9, Connor, Garrett, and Pavani make their way back to the Towers. In a shocking turn of events, Garrett reveals his true intentions, aiming to use the K9 as leverage against King and his associates.

An intense confrontation ensues as King and his force surround the Towers, ambushing the group when Garrett’s attempts at negotiation fail. As things escalate, Garrett is fatally stabbed by King, paving the way for chaos. With the aid of his co-workers as a distraction, Connor and Pavani make their escape, harnessing Pavani’s full power to turn the K9 against King’s henchmen.

Once outside, the trio faces a climactic showdown. Garrett makes a final stand against both a K9 and King himself, allowing Pavani to broadcast incriminating footage from King’s K9, ultimately delivering justice for her brother's tragic fate.

In the aftermath, King is arrested, and the K9 program is suspended for a thorough investigation. While Garrett finds himself imprisoned, Connor has taken strides toward rebuilding the youth community center, dedicating it to Mina's memory, alongside Pavani.

Code 8: Part II Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Code 8: Part II (2024): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Sergeant King kill Tarak and frame it as an overdose?

Sergeant King kills Tarak to cover up the fact that he was caught stealing money from Garrett's operation. When King discovers Tarak with the stolen cash, he orders a K9 unit to eliminate him and stages the scene to appear as a drug overdose. This protects King's corrupt relationship with Garrett and prevents the truth about his involvement in the drug trade from surfacing.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, the film establishes that corrupt officers like King are on Garrett's payroll, making the cover-up logically consistent with his character.

  • sergeant king
  • tarak
  • murder
  • cover up
  • k9 unit
Q2

Why does Sergeant King want Pavani dead?

King wants Pavani dead because she witnessed him ordering the K9 to kill her brother Tarak. Since she used her abilities to disable the K9 and escape, King views her as a threat who could expose his corruption and role in the murder. He specifically tells Garrett that Pavani must be silenced.

Foreshadowing: The film establishes early that King will do anything to protect the existing power structures, including eliminating witnesses.

  • pavani
  • sergeant king
  • witness
  • threat
Q3

What are Pavani's abilities as a Transducer?

Pavani is a Transducer, which means she can interface with and control technology, particularly the K9 robots. She uses this ability to disable the K9 that killed her brother, allowing her to escape. Later, she accesses a K9's memory to retrieve evidence of Tarak's murder and broadcasts incriminating footage to expose King.

Foreshadowing: The film establishes that 4% of the population has special abilities, though Pavani's specific powers are revealed gradually.

  • pavani
  • transducer
  • abilities
  • k9 control
Q4

Why does Connor suggest erasing Pavani's traumatic memories?

Connor proposes wiping Pavani's memory of witnessing her brother's murder to spare her the psychological trauma. However, he realizes this would erase ALL her memories of Tarak, including her love for him. This moral dilemma drives Connor to rescue her instead, choosing truth over convenient oblivion.

Foreshadowing: Connor's desire to help stems from his own past mistakes and his role as a mentor figure at the community center.

  • connor
  • pavani
  • memory erasure
  • trauma
Q5

What is Psyke and how is it produced?

Psyke is a drug harvested from the spinal fluid of people with special abilities. Garrett operates an "ethical" version of this trade by actually paying individuals for their fluid, though the process itself is exploitative. The drug is highly addictive and represents the systemic exploitation of the powered population.

Foreshadowing: The film establishes early that people with abilities live in poverty and are marginalized, making them vulnerable to such exploitation.

  • psyke
  • drug
  • spinal fluid
  • exploitation
Q6

Why does Mina sacrifice herself?

Mina sacrifices herself during the ambush at the escape attempt by distracting King's forces. This act provides Connor, Pavani, and Garrett the crucial window they need to escape. Her sacrifice is motivated by her role as a protector of the community center and the people who seek refuge there.

Foreshadowing: Mina is established as the leader of the community center who provides safety to those in need, making her sacrifice consistent with her character.

  • mina
  • sacrifice
  • death
  • community center
Q7

Why does Garrett die at the end?

Garrett dies because he voluntarily stays behind to fight King and the K9 units, allowing Connor and Pavani to escape with the evidence. During the confrontation, King fatally stabs Garrett. His sacrifice ensures Pavani can broadcast the incriminating K9 footage that exposes King and brings justice for Tarak.

Foreshadowing: Garrett's guilt over exploiting powered individuals and his desire to redeem himself for his past crimes set up his ultimate sacrifice.

  • garrett
  • death
  • sacrifice
  • king
Q8

What evidence does the K9 unit hold against King?

The K9 unit contains memory footage of Sergeant King ordering it to kill Tarak. This recording proves King murdered an innocent person and then staged the scene as an overdose. Pavani accesses this evidence using her Transducer abilities and broadcasts it publicly to expose King's crimes.

Foreshadowing: The K9's recording capabilities were established earlier when Kingston explained the units are programmed to document interactions.

  • k9
  • evidence
  • memory
  • king
  • murder
Q9

Why does King hide his own powers?

King possesses mutant powers himself but conceals them to maintain his authority within the police force and society. By appearing as a regular human in a position of power, he can more effectively hunt and oppress other powered individuals while projecting an image of normalcy and legitimacy.

Foreshadowing: The film establishes early that society views powered individuals as threats, creating irony in a corrupt cop secretly being one of them.

  • king
  • powers
  • mutant
  • hidden
Q10

What is the relationship between Connor and Garrett?

Connor and Garrett are brothers. After being released from prison, Connor works at a community center and tries to distance himself from his criminal past, even refusing Garrett's attempts to reconnect. Garrett runs the drug operation at Towers and ultimately helps Connor and Pavani bring down King, sacrificing himself in the process.

Foreshadowing: Garrett visiting Connor at prison establishes their sibling bond early in the film.

  • connor
  • garrett
  • brothers
  • family
Q11

Why is the K9 program suspended after the confrontation?

The K9 program is suspended because the K9 unit that witnessed King's murder of Tarak contains irrefutable evidence of police corruption and illegal killings. When Pavani broadcasts this footage, it exposes the program's misuse and leads to a formal investigation, temporarily halting robot policing in the city.

Foreshadowing: Kingston's campaign to expand the K9 program as a "non-lethal" alternative is undermined by the revelation of its weaponized misuse.

  • k9 program
  • suspended
  • investigation
  • corruption
Q12

Why does Tarak steal from Garrett's operation?

Tarak steals money from Garrett because he desperately needs to support his sister Pavani's education. Despite working in Garrett's drug operation, he cannot earn enough to pay for her schooling, so he resorts to stealing. This act of desperation leads directly to his tragic death.

Foreshadowing: The film establishes early that powered individuals live in poverty, making Tarak's financial desperation believable.

Read the full ending explained

At the end of Code 8: Part II, Garrett makes a bold choice to expose police corruption and take a stand against injustice, even if it means going to prison. Throughout the film, we see Garrett transforming from a man operating under orders into a leader who fights for the rights of powered individuals and seeks to protect them from being villainized. His decision to reveal Sergeant Kingston’s treachery during a confrontation with the community signifies his moral awakening and willingness to face the consequences of his actions. Although he is ultimately arrested for running the Psyke drug trade, Garrett’s actions expose widespread corruption within the police force and the illegal dealings of Kingston and his associates.

In the final scenes, Garrett remains in jail but appears to continue influencing behind bars. The film hints at his potential to maintain control within the prison system, possibly building connections with other powerful individuals and continuing his fight for justice in a new realm.
