The film is crafted as found footage retrieved by the United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. A disclaimer specifies that the footage pertains to the case designated as “Cloverfield” and was discovered in the area previously known as Central Park. The narrative primarily unfolds through clips filmed during the night of Friday, May 22, 2009, interspersed with earlier recordings.
The story kicks off with Rob (Michael Stahl-David](/actor/michael-stahl-david)) waking up on Monday, April 27, after spending the night with Beth (Odette Yustman), a friend with whom he had a platonic relationship until now. They plan to visit Coney Island that day, promising a day filled with fun and laughter.
Fast forward to May 22 at 6:43 PM, where Jason (Mike Vogel](/actor/mike-vogel)) and his girlfriend Lily (Jessica Lucas) are throwing a farewell party for Rob, who is set to move to Japan. Their friend Hud (.J. Miller) takes the reins of the camera to film party testimonials, although his lack of experience leads to a disjointed video. He harbors a crush on Marlena ([Lizzy Caplan), who is present at the celebration.
As the evening progresses, Rob arrives to a surprise party, only to discover that Hud has taped over the footage of his outing with Beth, which leads to an awkward encounter. A tense moment surfaces when it becomes clear that Beth is still involved with Travis (Ben Feldman), despite her recent fling with Rob, igniting a heated argument between the two.
Just as they navigate the emotional turmoil, an inexplicable earthquake rattles the building, plunging them into chaos. The local news broadcasts an alarming report about an oil tanker capsizing near Liberty Island, and the party-goers are struck by the terrifying sight of the Statue of Liberty’s head crashing onto the streets, marred by strange markings.
Hud captures a glimpse of a colossal creature in the distance as horror descends upon Manhattan, leading the group to hightail it across the Brooklyn Bridge. Tragically, they lose Jason amidst the panic, and news updates detail the Army National Guard’s efforts to combat the looming threat, showcasing fierce battles against smaller parasitic creatures.
With an urgent phone call from Beth alerting Rob to her perilous situation, he disregards the escalating danger and, along with Hud and Lily, ventures into the devastated heart of Midtown Manhattan to rescue her. The city transforms into a war zone as they navigate through collapsing buildings and military confrontations.
Upon reaching the subway, they face terrifying attacks from parasitic entities, and Marlena tragically succumbs to one of them. Despite this, Rob’s determination to save Beth remains unwavering, and he persuades a military commander for passage. They learn of the looming “Hammer Down Protocol,” a plan to obliterate Manhattan to eliminate the threat, with the last evacuation helicopters scheduled to depart at 0600 the next morning.
The trio presses on to find Beth, who is perilously trapped in her apartment. After navigating perilous debris, they manage to rescue her but soon find themselves face-to-face with the monster once again at Grand Central Terminal. In a frantic rush, Lily escapes aboard a departing helicopter, while Rob, Beth, and Hud face the monstrous creature, leading to a catastrophic helicopter crash in Central Park.
As the countdown to destruction begins, they find momentary refuge but at a grave cost; Hud loses his life to the creature. Just as Rob and Beth embrace their affection for one another, the impending explosion looms. The camera, representing the last remnant of their social documentation, is lost beneath debris, concluding with a heartfelt proclamation of love.
The movie comes full circle by revisiting clips of Rob and Beth’s outing to Coney Island on April 27, 2009. An enigmatic object falls from the sky into the sea, and as the screen fades to black, Beth’s voice is heard saying, “I had a good day.”
In an unsettling after-credits scene, a haunting plea, “Help us…” echoes, which when played in reverse ominously reveals, “It’s still alive.”
