Sunder Srivastava, Shah Rukh Khan, is a young graduate with a clear, almost stubborn dream: to build a school on his father’s half-acre plot in the village. But the funds to turn that dream into reality are nowhere to be found, and the clock of opportunity seems to be ticking down every day. In this moment of despair, his childhood friend Prem, Avinash Kharshikar, a seasoned conman from Mumbai, convinces him to part with his money in exchange for the right to mortgage the land. The plan is supposed to be simple, almost innocent, but it seethes with the arrogance of a man who believes he can outwit fate.
Entering Mumbai, Sunder’s hopes are dashed in rapid succession. He is first duped into losing his luggage, then pick-pocketed, and finally finds himself penniless and stranded. It doesn’t take long for him to realize that Prem has engineered his downfall and has vanished—fled to Dubai with the money he trusted him with. With nowhere else to go and no one to turn to, Sunder seeks shelter in the cemetery, a stark, quiet place where the noise of the world seems to fade away. He settles on a tombstone, venting the torrent of his misfortunes into the night and into the void.
From the shadows, a voice answers. Sunder panics, but the voice remains calm, surprised that a living person can even hear him. When the unseen speaker finally becomes visible, he introduces himself as Amar Kumar, known to most as Marco. Marco, Naseeruddin Shah, explains that he is no ordinary ghost but a soul bound by a curse of unredeemed sins. He can hear and see Sunder because of a God-given prophecy: only Sunder can hear and see him, and only Sunder can help him find peace. Marco’s tale then unfolds in haunting detail.
Marco had once ruled the city’s underworld, a fearsome gangster who nonetheless loved Savitri Kaul, the daughter of Mr. Kaul. Savitri would not consent to marriage unless Marco walked away from crime for good, a pledge Marco made in earnest. Yet the road out of crime proved treacherous, and Marco’s own protégé, Kunta, plotted to eclipse him. On Marco’s wedding night, Kunta kidnapped and killed him, burying him in a cemetery where his spirit lingers. Marco reveals to Sunder that many of the city’s crimes that bear his name are actually the work of Kunta and his gang.
Marco is tormented by his past and the knowledge that redemption remains out of reach. He was foretold by God that only a savior might free him from this fate, and he believes that Sunder is that savior. Though terrified, Sunder is reminded of his own dream—the school he wants to build—and Marco’s insistence that he can help if he accepts a bargain. The two strike an uneasy alliance: Marco will assist Sunder in his mission, but only if Sunder helps Savitri Kaul and her father, Mr. Kaul, reclaim what is theirs and save the school project from ruin.
To begin, Marco uses his supernatural abilities to secure Sunder a post as cricket coach at Mr. Kaul’s school, giving him a foothold in a community that could become the school’s home. The hope is bright, but dark truths soon surface. After Marco’s murder, Kunta and his men have insinuated themselves into Savitri’s world, telling her that Marco is alive and guiding Savitri to hand over ownership documents for a hotel; Savitri refuses unless Marco himself returns to speak with them. The pressure builds and, in a desperate moment, Kunta makes a brutal attempt on Savitri’s safety. Thankfully, Savitri’s father steps in, tears and all, and vows to protect his daughter and the documents.
Marco’s heartbreak deepens when he learns that Savitri dies not long after this confrontation, but the revelation brings a new, surprising bloom: he discovers that he has a daughter with Savitri, Mala, Urmila Matondkar. This new bond fuels Marco’s resolve and reshapes his ghostly mission. With Mala in the picture and Sunder by his side, the two form a fragile alliance that is powered by a shared love for the school and a desire to rebuild their lives anew.
The plot thickens as Sunder and Mala grow closer, and Marco continues to protect them from Kunta’s interference. The ghost’s presence becomes a powerful, invisible shield as he guides their efforts to raise funds for the school, and he reveals a hidden room filled with Marco’s loot—money that could seal the project’s fate. The plan is simple in theory: make an anonymous donation to secure the school’s future while leaving enough behind to help Sunder realize his dream. But the moment Kunta discovers the secret room, the money is stolen and its use quickly falls into the hands of the wrong people. In a flash of despair, Marco mutters a sharp couple of words that puncture the night air: Woh Kunta saala.
In a desperate bid to recover what was lost, Marco uses a sly gambit to double the money, but the truth surfaces and Sunder becomes the fall guy for the theft, even though there is no solid proof. The tension between truth and trust tears at their alliance, driving a rift between them that seems almost fatal. Yet Marco, determined to redeem his own name and to keep Sunder from being crushed under the weight of suspicion, comes clean about the theft, and the two brothers-in-arms fight their way through the fallout.
Time moves on, and Sunder is released from prison to face a high-stakes cricket match between his team and one led by Kunta’s nephew. If Sunder’s team wins, the school will secure the funds needed to stay afloat. At first, the odds tilt away from them, but Marco reenters the field—still invisible to most, but radiating a new, almost magnetic energy—and sabotages the rival team. The shift is undeniable: their side surges to victory, and hope blooms once again for the school and for Sunder’s dream.
Yet the drama isn’t over. Sunder reveals the truth about Marco’s ghost to the inspector who has haunted the case, known in the tale as IG Tripathi, shaking the foundation of the investigation and forcing the villainous Kunta to confront the consequences of his actions. Before long, a dangerous confrontation unfolds: Kunta abducts Sunder and Mala and tries to bury them alive in the same cemetery where Marco was laid to rest. Marco summons help, guiding the police to the cemetery and leading a final, violent clash between his former allies and the living.
In the heat of the struggle, Marco wrestles with Kunta, the rope tightening as a confession edges closer. Sunder urges Kunta to tell the truth, and Mala, standing strong, begs Marco not to stain his hands with more blood. Her plea—“father”—pierces the moment, and Marco relents, sparing Kunta’s life.
The final act is one of redemption. Sunder completes his mission by restoring Marco’s name, and he and Mala wed, with Marco himself attending the wedding, a haunting but hopeful presence. As the ceremony reaches its zenith, a beam of light descends upon Marco, lifting him toward heaven. Yet even in his ascent, he pauses to deliver a last, quiet instruction to the living: to choose the right path while you still can, for there may not be another chance once life has moved on.
Woh Kunta saala
In the end, the tale is not merely about curses and hauntings, but about faith, second chances, and the stubborn belief that a dream—like a school for children—can outlive fear, even when the world itself seems stacked against it. Through Sunder’s perseverance, Marco’s longing for redemption, and Mala’s quiet strength, the story closes on a note of hopeful resolve, tying together a village’s aspirations with a man’s unfinished business from beyond the grave.
