Detectives Kyle Bodine and Lamar Dickey are assigned to a murder scene and begin the case. Bodine remarks that all murderers make stupid mistakes, a line that foreshadows how the investigation might unfold.

At a local bar, Bodine attempts to charm Rachel Munro, who is married to Rupert Munro. She rebuffs him, signaling the beginning of tension between them.

Back at Rachel's home, she drinks heavily while viewing photos of Rupert with Adele. The emotional strain leads to her beginning an affair with Bodine.

Kyle and Rachel row on a lake under a full moon, which Kyle calls the China Moon and links to people doing crazy things. As their affair develops, Kyle urges Rachel to divorce Rupert.

The police are called to the Munro home for a domestic disturbance. Kyle warns Rupert to leave Rachel alone after she is badly beaten.

Rachel drives to Kyle's trailer and imagines killing Rupert. She reveals she has bought a 9mm pistol and considers an alibi to make it look like a vacation trip.

Rachel travels to a Miami hotel, where a concierge gives her an envelope containing a rental car key. Adele is seen in the lobby, hinting at hidden involvement.

Instead of driving home, Rachel returns to Kyle's trailer to collect her things. Rupert comes home and catches her leaving; she shoots him twice in self-defense. Kyle agrees to help her cover the crime and erase the scene.

They carefully clear the scene—removing bullets from the wall, spackling holes, and painting over evidence before dumping Rupert's body in the lake where he and Rachel first made love.

Rachel returns to the Miami hotel and has brunch by the pool the next morning. She then follows Kyle's plan and reports Rupert missing to the police.

Kyle and Lamar interview Rachel, but Lamar remains skeptical, suggesting she could have had an accomplice. He notes that Rachel is known for wrapping men around her finger and hints at a motive tied to Rupert's fortune.

The autopsy confirms a .38 caliber bullet, matching Kyle's service weapon. The investigators realize the case may implicate him, and he is suspended from duty and ordered to surrender his pistol.

Adele meets with Lamar and he pays her for her part in the scheme, showing that he intends to complete the plan and collect his share once the murder is resolved.

Kyle sneaks into Rachel's house and confronts her about the scheme. She confesses that Rupert was going to leave her with nothing and that Lamar had orchestrated everything to secure the fortune for them. She swears she loves Kyle despite the betrayal.

At the bar, Kyle confronts Lamar and demands the location of his service revolver. The bartender calls the police as Kyle searches Lamar's car; officers open fire, killing Kyle. A distraught Rachel runs to his side and then uses Lamar's .38 to kill him, ending the conspiracy.
