The narrative unfolds in the quaint mining town of Langwith, located in Derbyshire, where the Shaw family gathers to celebrate the momentous occasion of their 40th wedding anniversary. At the heart of this celebration is Mr. Shaw, who has diligently worked as a coal miner for an impressive 49 years, and is eagerly counting down the days until his well-deserved retirement in just one more year. His wife, Mrs. Shaw, comes from a lineage of higher social standing as the daughter of a pig breeder, adding another layer of complexity to their familial dynamics.

Despite their aspirations for their three sons to break free from the chains of their father’s laborious trade, the paths they’ve chosen have led to a mix of fulfillment and disappointment. The eldest son, Andrew, initially followed a predictable route by training as a solicitor, yet he has chosen to forsake that career in favor of pursuing his passion for painting, hinting at a yearning for artistic expression. Meanwhile, the middle child, Colin, who dabbled briefly in Communism, has found himself mired in a successful yet unyielding role as an industrial relations manager at a car manufacturing company, where he faces the daily grind of negotiating with unions—a role that seems to sap his zest for life.
