Stephen Arden urges his friend Dr. Tony Flagg to psychoanalyze Amanda Cooper. Tony records his blunt opinion on a dictaphone, describing her as a 'dizzy, silly, maladjusted' woman. Amanda overhears the recording and is upset by the brutal assessment, setting a tense tone for their dynamic.

Tony rushes off to the laboratory after the recording, leaving Amanda waiting. While alone in the laboratory, she accidentally overhears his dictaphone recording. The revelation unsettles her trust in him and foreshadows the complications to come.

The next day, Stephen invites Tony to a country club so he can continue the analysis. Amanda reluctantly opens up, admitting she was angry after overhearing Tony's remarks. Tony apologizes and tries to ease the tension between them.

To probe Amanda's subconscious, Tony orders her to eat bizarre food combinations at dinner to induce dreams. He outlines that the dream material will reveal the root of her fear of commitment. The plan marks a shift from talk therapy to dream-based analysis.

That night Amanda dreams of dancing with Tony, culminating in a kiss that feels forbidden and intoxicating. The dream exposes hidden romantic tension between them. She wakes unsettled but aware of new feelings.

The next day, Amanda invents a convoluted nightmare, and Tony administers an anesthetic to lower her inhibitions. While Tony is away, Stephen barges in, unaware of the drug. The drugged Amanda breaks a pane of glass, insults the sponsor on a radio show, and kicks a policeman.

That evening, Amanda confides in her Aunt Cora that she loves Tony. She is joined later by Tony, Stephen, and Judge Joe Travers for dinner. Stephen misinterprets Amanda's words as acceptance of the engagement, prompting Amanda to confess her love for Tony during a dance.

The next day Tony hypnotizes Amanda into thinking she wants to marry Stephen and that men like him 'should be shot down like dogs'. Realizing his own growing love for Amanda, he struggles with the ethical line. When Amanda abruptly leaves his office, the emotional stakes are clear.

Still under hypnosis, Amanda arrives at the country club and confronts the situation. She finds Stephen skeet shooting with Judge Travers, and when Tony appears, she grabs a shotgun and fires at him until he snaps her out of the trance. The confrontation confirms the intensity of their bond.

Tony explains the situation to Stephen, who successfully convinces Judge Travers to issue a restraining order blocking Tony from seeing Amanda. Crashing Amanda and Stephen's engagement party with the help of Cora, Tony and Connors plot to re-hypnotize her, but Stephen foils their efforts.

On the wedding day, Tony and Connors orchestrate an intrusion with Cora's help. Tony intends to knock Amanda unconscious to hypnotize her, but cannot bring himself to do it when he faces her. Stephen punches Tony, accidentally knocks out Amanda, and Tony declares his love while Amanda remains unconscious.

With Amanda unconscious but recovering, she regains consciousness just in time to walk down the aisle with Tony by her side. The couple confronts the chaos of the day and chooses each other despite the turmoil. The ceremony ends with Amanda walking toward her future, united with Tony.
