Chip Gutchell, Tyler Cornack, is an absent-minded IT guy at the RTM (RoofTop Makeover) sales office in the South Kritika Counties, where manager Rick Mitchum Austin Lewis leads a mandatory sing-along to celebrate the promotion of Jon Lee Wilky Lau. The tone of the office is chaotic yet oddly celebratory as employees shuffle through the routine, their focus split between sales targets and the odd camaraderie that comes with a big corporate push.
The next day brings a bizarre personal vendetta of another kind. Chip undergoes his first prostate exam, performed by a quirky doctor, and somehow the experience becomes a source of thrill for him. He then pressures his wife, Anne Gutchell Shelby Dash, to engage in a provocative act during their intimate moment—an act she refuses. In a startled shower, Chip escalates his private rituals, an obsession that begins to redefine what he considers normal. The ritualistic behavior is tied to a growing sense of control, and it is all framed within a household that is slowly becoming unhinged.
Meanwhile, Anne cannot locate the remote control, and on a late night out, Chip escalates his actions by inserting various objects into his rectum. By morning, their dog Rocky is missing, and soon after, a baby boy is taken from a park. A news listener offers little sympathy for the distressed mother, underscoring a world that seems uncaring and indifferent to the chaos unfolding in Chip’s life.
Chip sinks into depression and makes a failed attempt at suicide. He eventually finds a reason to carry on and joins Alcoholics Anonymous, albeit under the guise of pretending to be an alcoholic. Years later, the mentor at the AA group, Nelson Guerrera Robert Moss, who disdains the notion of sugar addiction, assigns Chip to sponsor a new member: Russel Fox Tyler Rice, a detective, alcoholic, and smoker. Chip confides in Russel about Anne’s growing contempt and the fact that she became pregnant too early. Russel, who himself is wrestling with personal turmoil—obsessing over his ex-wife who has moved on and is pregnant—finds in Chip a reluctant ally. As emotions flare, Russel reaches out to his sponsor, but Chip remains persistently unavailable, creating a rift that strains their budding relationship.
Back at the office, Rick announces that the perseverance plaque is missing and that there will be a bring-your-kids-to-work day. Chip’s son Marty Gutchell [Tyler Dryden] is unimpressed with his father’s line of work, while Jon Lee’s son Andrew Lee [Kai Henderson] goes missing while playing hide-and-seek. Russel is assigned to investigate and reconnects with Chip, who tries to rationalize his absences by claiming Anne has a non-existent cerebral palsy—a justification that only deepens Anne’s dissatisfaction and draws the suspicion of Russel. Chip eventually returns to the AA program, this time with Russel by his side.
Anne, seeking involvement, invites Russel to dinner. She pours wine, flatters Russel, and subtly undermines Chip. In a tense moment, Russel pretends to defecate and manages to obtain an incriminating computer disc that Chip had failed to hide during a previous argument with his wife. Realizing the leverage Russel now holds, Chip pursues him, but in a startling reversal, he somehow sucks the disc into his own powerful rectum. Russel narrowly escapes and informs Chief John Lazarra [Brad Potts], who is skeptical and ultimately dismissive of the claims, expelling Russel from the precinct.
Chip ends up hospitalized, reaffirming his devotion to Anne, who reciprocates for the moment. Russel, however, relapses into alcoholism, adding another layer of tension to an already fractured dynamic.
The tension peaks during Marty’s laser tag birthday party when Russel tries to dispatch Chip, but Chip’s enhanced physiology proves to be a formidable obstacle. In a surreal turn, Chip’s backside becomes so powerful that Russel is drawn into the same confinement he had feared—a kind of rectal encounter with the bizarre reality of their situation. Chip is hailed as a hero, while Russel is vilified as a crazed criminal in hiding.
Inside Chip’s hellish bowels, Russel encounters Andrew and Rocky and discovers a withdrawn boy whom they recognize as Russel’s long-lost son—the baby from the park. The boy, who learns the word “colon” but struggles with “dad,” is grateful for any morsels of undigested food and endures the overpowering stench of their confinement.
Russel keeps count of their days on the back of the perseverance plaque as their limited world becomes increasingly uncomfortable. Their daily routine is eased only slightly by a physical therapist who administers Vicodin, offering a glimmer of relief. A possible exit emerges when Russel notices the therapist’s fingers during an examination.
Chip is soon promoted to fill Jon Lee’s leave of absence, and his heroism is celebrated by the company. Russel and the boys manage to liberate the soap, the remote control, and, to Anne’s relief, Rocky. Andrew’s rescue seems close at hand, but Chip sabotages the plan by consuming a potent stomach elixir that fatally scalds Andrew, effectively ending their escape attempt.
As the story builds toward its climax, a nervous Chip dismisses Anne and prepares to accept an award in front of Mayor Michael Cage, Chief Lazarra, and an expectant audience. Just as he is about to deliver a speech, Russel—grappling with the elixir—concocts a plan and triggers a flatulent explosion that splatters Chip across the stage and bunting. Father and son emerge relatively unscathed from the chaos, while Russel hands the evidential disc to the overwhelmed Chief Lazarra, declaring the case closed. In the aftermath, Chip reunites with his son and is approved by the stepfather, while Russel exits the scene, at last finding a sense of resolution to a decade of inner turmoil.
