Grace discovers a hidden crypt in the church and, amid the silence of the crypt, comes across a mysterious voodoo book. She is quickly sent away by Father Cornelius, but the encounter seeds a dangerous turn for the town. At the local high school, Nathan navigates the usual teenage currents with his friends, including Henry and Diggs. Nathan secretly admires his long-time friend Jessica, yet his fear of rejection keeps him from asking her out. The social mix at school is crowded with the popular trio of girls—Cheryl, Charlotte, and Glenda—and Cheryl, in particular, makes a beeline for Nathan, even as her boyfriend Samson looms nearby with a not-so-subtle air of possessiveness and a tense circle of friends including Kenneth.

Back at school, Nathan hears a false account from Kenneth about what happened with Jessica the night before, further complicating his feelings and trust. Jessica, determined to reach out, tries to meet him, but Nathan’s fear and the creeping symptoms of the book pull him toward a far darker path. That night, at a school disco, Nathan’s condition deteriorates into something almost undead, and he bites [Samson], unleashing a cascade of infections that ripple through the town. Samson, in turn, attacks Shane and infects him, spreading fear and chaos.

Jessica makes a perilous attempt to reach Nathan, but he warns her away, recognizing that something has gone wrong with him. The following day, Grace explains what happened, and Nathan realizes that Samson is the source of the spread. Police intervention proves futile, and Nathan’s family tries to shield him as his condition worsens. Grace locks Nathan in the garage and searches for a cure, while the town’s survivors—Henry and Diggs among them—bear witness to the growing epidemic. Charlotte herself becomes a zombie and infects Kenneth, a blow that deepens the town’s fear. Cheryl and Glenda seek refuge in a bar, where a zombie attack erupts, and Henry and Diggs witness further chaos on a video store street. The friends grab Jessica and urge her to stay inside as they work toward safety.

As the nightmare expands, Henry and Diggs head toward Jessica’s home, with Cheryl in pursuit, while Grace returns to the church, where infected Father Cornelius is an ominous threat. In a brutal turn, the priest is bitten by a snake in the crypt, and the venom is revealed to be the possible cure to the infection. Grace seizes the snake and heads into the night, hoping the venom will turn the tide. The chase through the graveyard intensifies: Glenda is bitten by the infected Charlotte, and Cheryl escapes as the danger closes in.

Nathan finds Jessica in a barn near her house, and she reveals that nothing happened with Kenneth after all. Henry and Diggs reach Jessica’s place, with Cheryl hot on their heels, and they hide together in a cupboard as night falls. When the danger passes, Nathan arrives to rescue everyone, and Jessica fights off a wave of attackers with a tractor, turning the odds in their favor. The survivors retreat to the barn’s upper platform, a temporary refuge that becomes a trap as Samson and Shane break in and infect Cheryl. The group escapes to safety but ends up trapped again, dousing the floor with gasoline as a desperate precaution.

Grace arrives with the snake, intent on saving her son and the town, but the snake escapes in the confusion and the attack resumes. The group is driven apart, and Nathan must face the truth of his own transformation. He saves Grace from the oncoming horde and makes a final stand against the zombies, only to be fully enveloped by the ritual’s power. The snakes’ bite seems to alter his fate, and the encroaching flames threaten to consume them all. Jessica, Diggs and Henry manage to escape the burning barn, and they later learn that Nathan survived the fire. In a bittersweet reversal, the two teenagers finally acknowledge their feelings: Jessica agrees to go out with Nathan in a quiet, hopeful moment that closes the horror on a fragile note of renewed connection.
