The following day in San Francisco, a curious man named Walter Chalmers checks into a hotel and asks for any messages regarding Johnny Ross. His shocked reaction to no responses reveals his deep interest in Ross as part of his political ambitions.

Walter Chalmers is an ambitious politician aiming to enhance his public image by supporting a Senate subcommittee hearing focused on organized crime. He specifically seeks to target Pete Ross, highlighting the significance of the upcoming hearing.

Johnny Ross is placed under the protective custody of the San Francisco Police Department due to his involvement in a $2 million embezzlement from the Chicago mob. Lieutenant Frank Bullitt and his team set up surveillance at the Hotel Daniels to keep Ross safe.

Lieutenant Bullitt organizes a three-shift rotation for surveillance at the rundown Hotel Daniels, assigning Sergeant Delgetti to the first watch. This decision highlights the police's commitment to protecting Ross amidst the brewing dangers.
