Highway Dragnet

Jim Henry, [Richard Conte], a former Korean War Marine sergeant recently discharged, heads to Las Vegas to visit an old comrade and ends up entangled in a dangerous turn of events. In a casino, the former fashion model Terry Smith, [Mary Beth Hughes], becomes a focal point of his attention, and what begins as a reckless spark of attraction quickly pulls Jim into a web of suspicion and fear. The following morning, while Jim is hitching a ride, Las Vegas police detain him and take him to an apartment where Lt. Joe White Eagle, [Reed Hadley], uncovers a shocking development: Terry has been strangled.

Jim insists he has an alibi provided by his friend Paul, but Paul cannot corroborate it because he is a secret army agent operating under an entirely different identity. Panicking, Jim grabs an officer’s service revolver, grabs the police by surprise, and escapes in a patrol car, even shooting out the tires of another vehicle. He slams the car into a reckless escape along Highway 91, abandoning the vehicle, and changing clothes. As he tries to lay low, he encounters two women stranded by a broken-down car: Mrs. H. G. Cummings, [Joan Bennett], a sharp, married magazine photographer, and her vivacious model, Susan Willis, [Wanda Hendrix].

The trio’s uneasy alliance leads them to the Apple Valley Inn, where Mrs. Cummings and Susan invite Jim to stay during a photographic assignment. Before long, the police close in, reconstructing the chase with roadblocks and an intensified search. A grim accident accompanies their arrival when Mrs. Cummings’s small dog is killed by a passing car, foreshadowing the danger that surrounds Jim.

Back at the inn, a newspaper report with Jim’s photo enrages Susan, who wants to call the authorities, but Mrs. Cummings stops her, hinting that the police will target her because Terry Smith was the woman involved with her husband’s infidelity. Jim’s presence becomes public, and he is recognized; aware that the net is closing, he takes Mrs. Cummings and Susan hostage, commandeers a car, and pushes through the roadblocks. The escape becomes a tense desert chase as they head toward Jim’s partially flooded house by the Salton Sea.

At his home, Jim explains to Susan that he must reach Paul to confirm his innocence, since only Paul could verify the truth. The next morning, he tells Mrs. Cummings and Susan to leave, but Susan chooses to stay, drawn to Jim and unsure of his guilt. Lt. White Eagle arrives to arrest Jim, and Susan is ordered to place Jim’s gun on the sink. Mrs. Cummings quietly enters, retrieves the weapon, and shoots White Eagle, attempting to shoot Jim and Susan as well, but the gun jams. Cummings flees, only to land in a treacherous mix of water and sand—quicksand-like mud that threatens to swallow her.

As officers close in, Cummings’ desperate pleas for rescue collide with the truth coming to light: she confesses to strangling her husband’s girlfriend with her dog’s leash, a revelation overheard by others at the scene. Lt. White Eagle, though not seriously wounded, forestalls any charges against Jim, noting that their principal witness is Susan, and that “a wife can’t testify against her husband.” With the tension resolved, Jim and Susan walk away together, arm in arm, toward an uncertain but hopeful future.
