Brendan, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, finds himself in a heartbreaking situation as he sits beside the body of a young girl named Emily, portrayed by Emilie de Ravin, who lies lifeless in a drainage tunnel. The grim reality of her death strikes him deeply, leaving him emotional and devastated.

The story unfolds just two days prior when Emily slips a note into Brendan’s locker, leading him to a nearby phone booth. In an urgent call, she conveys that she is in trouble but uses ambiguous terms like “Frisco,” “pin,” “brick,” and “tug,” leaving Brendan perplexed. When a black muscle car passes by, panic sets in for Emily, causing her to flee, while a passenger coolly flicks a cigarette with a distinctive pale blue arrow.

To uncover the truth, Brendan turns to his friend Brain, who informs him that Emily was attempting to gain acceptance from the school’s elite crowd. This leads Brendan to break into Emily’s locker, where he discovers a torn red card tucked away in her notebook. An encounter with his ex-girlfriend, Kara, played by Meagan Good, reveals that the card is an invitation to an exclusive party, equipped with a phone number scribbled on the back.

Calling the number, Brendan speaks to Laura, enacted by Nora Zehetner, who belongs to this upper-crust society. At the party, Brendan confronts Laura to gather more information, learning that Emily had been associated with a group known as the “pie house rats,” who hang around a local café. Following this lead, Brendan visits the café, where he questions Dode, played by Noah Segan, Emily’s boyfriend. When Dode departs, Brendan witnesses him hand Emily a slip of paper. Brendan tries to offer his support, but she rebuffs him, leaving him no choice but to steal the slip. He discovers it represents a significant meeting location, which he later realizes points to the same drainage tunnel where he finds her deceased body.

As Brendan mourns, he reflects on Emily’s words, and Brain deciphers that “pin” refers to a local drug dealer known as The Pin, played by Lukas Haas, who has ties to the popular crowd. To attract The Pin’s attention, Brendan intentionally picks a fight with a popular boy named Brad. Although Laura tries to persuade him to back down, Brendan’s frustration convinces him otherwise. A confrontation with Tug, one of The Pin’s henchmen, lands Brendan in trouble, but it also offers a chance to get closer to The Pin himself.

After a series of encounters, Brendan learns the grim reality about Emily: she had stolen heroin to feed an addiction of her own. This revelation is compounded when Brendan narrowly escapes an assassination attempt by a knife-wielding attacker, hired as revenge by Brad. Following this, he gets involved with The Pin and his drug operations. He uncovers unsettling truths about the heroin trade, including a string of tainted drugs that led to a student’s coma, further complicating the web of deception surrounding him.

As tensions rise, ghostly recollections of Emily haunt Brendan, pushing him deeper into the murky underbelly of high school heroin dealings. The situation escalates when Brendan finally arranges for a meeting between Tug and The Pin, hoping to broker peace amidst the brewing conflict. His complicated relationship with Laura takes a turn, showing her vulnerability as she reveals more about the dangerous world they inhabit.

As the climax nears, betrayal looms large, culminating in a chaotic meeting that turns deadly. Brendan is caught in a whirlwind of violence, leading to life-altering revelations about loyalty, guilt, and betrayal. The shocking truth about Laura’s involvement surfaces, peeling back layers of deception, and ultimately, Brendan is left grappling with the aftermath of the unspeakable losses that occurred. He uncovers a convoluted plot where Laura was not the innocent bystander but a pivotal figure, driving the disastrous events that led to Emily’s demise.
