Similola Smart-Cole is frustrated by her son Sunmi’s lingering sloth and apparent apathy, even after she issues repeated warnings. After Sunmi is arrested on suspicion of breaking into his mother’s property, he is stunned to learn that his family, friends, and acquaintances have distance himself from him, and Similola is barred from returning to the family home. Abandoned on the streets, Sunmi turns to begging, until Todowede, a cynical bread hawker who had previously repelled Isky’s advances, recognizes him. Todowede, a tough but practical neighbor, takes Sunmi to her modest mini-flat in the crowded hoi polloi neighborhood, offering shelter on the condition that he earns his own keep.
Todowede, a hardened survivor of the city’s everyday struggles, introduces Sunmi to Jugunu, played by Lateef Adedimeji, the bakery owner who offers him a chance at work. Sunmi proves to be a diligent and dependable worker, slowly winning Jugunu’s trust and approval as he learns the ropes of bread-making and sales. When Todowede falls ill with malaria, Sunmi steps in to nurse her back to health, and once Todowede recovers, the two celebrate her birthday in a moment that softens Todowede’s rough exterior. Sunmi also drafts a bold business plan and pitches it to Jugunu, and the idea begins to take shape, hinting at a potential franchise that could transform their lives.
The journey isn’t without its pressures. Riski Baby—a flirtatious food trader with eyes on Sunmi—and Caliltus, Todowede’s ex-boyfriend who had cheated on her, press for attention, testing the limits of their unlikely partnership across social worlds. Yet Sunmi and Todowede persevere, and their bond deepens as they navigate the challenges posed by disdainful stares, competing ambitions, and the city’s unforgiving pace, ultimately moving toward a bigger, brighter home.
Similola’s nanny, Aunty Agy, visits Todowede’s newly established store and is taken aback to find Sunmi there. She reveals that Sunmi’s family has been searching for him for five years, but Sunmi, haunted by memories of abandonment, asks her to leave and then collapses. In the hospital, he wakes to realize that his supposed ordeals were a dream, while Imilola visits him and narrates how a quarrel led him to storm out and get into a car accident, which left him in a coma. Sunmi also recounts life in his alternate universe during the coma and the friends he encountered there, including Todowede, whose support helped him endure.
Upon discharge, Sunmi spots Todowede selling bread as his mother drives them home, and he leaps from the car to plead with her to come to his house by 9 AM the following day, a request she grudgingly accepts. The story reshapes his sense of belonging and possibility, suggesting a path where patience, hard work, and unexpected friendships can bridge divides that once seemed insurmountable.
In a post-credits moment, as Sunmi begins pitching his bakery dream to his mother, Aunty Agy steps in to announce that Todowede is waiting outside, ready to face the next chapter together.
