Mama’s Boy

Jeffrey Mannus Jon Heder is a 29-year-old bookstore clerk who still lives with his mother, Jan Mannus Diane Keaton. His father died when Jeffrey was young, so he clings to his mother and their small, orderly world, resisting any change that might threaten their routine. But that routine begins to crack when Jan meets Mert Rosenbloom Jeff Daniels, a charismatic motivational speaker who preaches the power of positivity and possibility.

Mert woos Jan after she attends one of his talks, and before long he moves in on what Jeffrey perceives as his territory, a line Jeffrey swears to defend. In the midst of this clash, Jeffrey finds a surprising ally in Nora Flannagan Anna Faris, an aspiring singer-songwriter who works at a coffee shop. Nora isn’t sugar-coated about life either; she shares a blunt, sometimes caustic view of the world that resonates with Jeffrey, and their budding friendship offers him a rare chance to be honest about his own flaws and disappointments.

Desperation tightens its grip when Jeffrey hires a man at a computer shop to dig up dirt on Mert. He pays half the agreed price when Mert himself strolls in to try to win Jeffrey over, hinting at the schemes below the surface of their uneasy standoff. The shop worker reveals Jeffrey’s plan to Mert, and Mert responds not with retreat but with a sharper tactic—he declares that there will be a “war” against Jeffrey.

On Mert’s suggestion, Jan moves Jeffrey out of his bedroom and into the basement, reshaping the domestic landscape that has defined their lives. The siege intensifies when Jan and Mert begin making audible noises during intimacy, and Jeffrey, revolted, leaves to attend one of Nora’s gigs. Despite an initial coldness, a genuine moment of apology helps Nora warm to him, and the two share a coffee after the show.

That weekend, Mert invites Nora to a barbecue at his house, hoping to press his advantage. Jan greets Nora with unbridled enthusiasm, even showing her an old photo of Jeffrey as a child, a reveal that underscores Jeffrey’s long history with weight and attachment issues. The atmosphere turns pointed as Mert and Jeffrey trade barbed comments, with Mert insinuating that Nora isn’t trying hard enough to become a success.

The feud spills into pranks and provocations, escalating until Jan and Mert announce their engagement and reveal plans to downsizing Jan’s house for something smaller. Desperate for leverage, Jeffrey interrupts Nora’s recording of a new demo to recruit her help in following a lead in Arizona. Then a wrenching truth emerges: Maya Sinclair turns out to be Mert’s estranged daughter, a secret Mert abandoned when she was twelve, and Nora grows furious realizing Jeffrey had used her to damage Mert.

Something extraordinary begins to happen—Jeffrey starts to glimpse a kinder, more capable version of himself. Yet before this shift fully takes hold, a heated fistfight erupts between Jeffrey and Mert in Jan’s home, and the confrontation leaves Jan breaking off the engagement when she learns about Maya. Jeffrey, oddly buoyed by a small sense of triumph, ends up out on the streets, his situation deteriorating until he is arrested for urinating in a sink. Seymour Warburton Eli Wallach, his former boss from the bookstore, comes to the rescue, paying his bail and offering him a place to stay again.

With his feet back on the ground, Jeffrey comes to understand his errors and makes a determined effort to repair what he has broken, especially his fragile ties with Jan and Mert. The pivotal moment arrives when Nora, who remains wary, boards a bus heading off to college. In a bold gesture, Jeffrey parks his new car in the middle of the road and climbs onto the hood, holding a radio that blasts one of Nora’s favorite songs. The bus driver convinces Nora to speak with him, and the two finally talk honestly, reconcile, and drive away together into the distance.
