Following the 2008 financial crisis, Jimmy Adams, James Lafferty — a former Wall Street hedge fund manager — is laid off. Plagued by guilt over his role in the crisis, he resolves to pursue work that feels more honest and rewarding.

After trying several blue-collar roles with little luck, he lands a night-shift server job at Papa’s Chicken and Waffles, a 24-hour diner chain. He discovers that many of his colleagues are ex-convicts, yet he forms an unlikely friendship with the restaurant’s seasoned short-order cook, Edward Collins, Danny Glover, who becomes a true mentor and offers practical life lessons about hard work and money from a fresh perspective.

Motivated by a dream of owning the Papa’s franchise, Adams throws himself into the goal, working toward the 1000-hour minimum required to qualify. The pursuit demands sacrifices, including downgrading their home and cars, and it creates tension at home with his wife Becky Adams, Julie Gonzalo.

Over six months at Papa’s, Adams gains new professional and personal insights and begins to view his earlier career through a different lens. When the time comes, he steps back into the finance world, this time concentrating on financial planning and wealth management. The experience also sees him offering guidance and startup advice to some of his former Papa’s colleagues, bridging the lessons of hands-on service with strategic financial planning.
