Lum Edwards Chester Lauck and Abner Peabody Norris Goff are two elderly men who run the Jot ‘Em Down general store, the beating heart of life in Pineridge, Arkansas. They quietly reach out to their neighbors, offering practical help and a sympathetic ear. When Wes Stillman Irving Bacon, an alcoholic, loses his daughter Effie Lou Stillman Sheila Sheldon in a traffic accident, he is overwhelmed by grief and blames himself for not protecting her. To bring him some relief and purpose, Lum and Abner arrange for Wes to become deputy sheriff, placing him in charge of enforcing traffic laws under Constable Caleb Weeunt Robert McKenzie.
The town’s post office is run from the general store, and Alice works as post-mistress. Kenneth Barnes, the doctor and son of Doc Walt Barnes, hopes to marry Alice, but her wealthy Aunt Jessica Spencer demands a better financial match and has a long-running feud with Doc Walt. Kenneth labors in the neighboring town, but his earnings aren’t enough to support a wife and their younger brother, so the couple waits. Lum and Abner set their sights on a plan: to secure a mobile medical unit that would let Kenneth provide for his future family and care for Alice’s younger brother Jimmy when he arrives from Adamstown.
When Jimmy falls gravely ill with pneumonia, Doc Walt uses the oxygen inhalator he invented to save the boy, but he dies in the process. The loss strikes Aunt Jessica with guilt, and at last she agrees to fund the mobile medical unit so Ken can save more lives. The town looks forward to a future where healthcare can reach people more quickly, and where the bonds between neighbors grow stronger.
Shortly after, justice catches up with the person who struck Effie Lou. Will Danielson, Jessica’s secretary, is arrested, bringing a measure of closure to the community and confirming that the town’s improvised plan was not in vain.
