Bon Cop Bad Cop

A body is found hanging on the sign marking the Ontario–Quebec border. Police from both provinces form a joint task force to investigate the case. The bilingual detectives, David Bouchard of the Sûreté du Québec and Martin Ward of the Ontario Provincial Police, must put aside their differences to work together.

The deceased is identified as Benoit Brisset, a hockey executive. Clues point the investigators toward Luc Therrien at a roadside bar. The pair heads to the bar to track him down.

A confrontation erupts in the bar, and the detectives manage to imprison Therrien in the trunk of Bouchard's car. Bouchard has promised to attend his daughter Gabrielle's ballet recital, so he drives off with Therrien locked away. The two detectives continue the pursuit while keeping their tense partnership intact.

Bouchard drives to Gabrielle's ballet recital with Therrien in the trunk, hoping to keep his promise. They return to find the car being towed from a no-parking zone. While attempting to stop the tow truck, the car explodes, disrupting their pursuit.

With Therrien no longer in the car, the detectives search his house and uncover a large marijuana grow operation in the basement. They also find the body of former hockey team owner Grossbut. The investigation deepens the link between the murders and the hockey world.

A laser tripwire is triggered by Bouchard, and a bomb explodes, setting the house on fire. The resulting fumes from the burning marijuana incapacitate them, and they are disciplined by Chief Leboeuf. The case hits a setback as the investigation spirals.

The next victim, Martina Flabcheeks, is discovered in Toronto. The detectives realize the killer tattoos each victim, with every tattoo serving as a clue to the next target. The murders are closely tied to parodic elements of major league hockey.

Ward and Bouchard appear on a hockey broadcast to warn the hockey community about the killer. The Tattoo Killer calls the show and threatens them, provoking a clash with the host and disrupting the program. The taunt escalates the chase.

Ward is attacked in his home by a masked assailant who is revealed to be Therrien. In a separate development, Bouchard sleeps with Ward's sister Iris, complicating personal and professional tensions.

The Tattoo Killer kidnaps Gabrielle, demanding the league commissioner Harry Buttman in exchange. This kidnapping intensifies the pursuit and sets up the final confrontation with the police.

It is revealed that a bilingual portly hockey fan is orchestrating the murders under the direction of a sadistic notion of hockey as national symbol. Therrien is used as a pawn to carry out the killings along with him as a signature for the crimes.

The killer kills Therrien, while Ward distracts him and Bouchard frees Gabrielle. After a struggle, the killer is blown up by one of his own explosives wired into Ward's pocket. Gabrielle is saved, and the two detectives survive the mission.

During the end credits, a news report states that Buttman will implement a rule prohibiting the relocation of hockey teams. The film ends with a political note about preserving the Canadian game's ownership.
