Two detectives cross the Ontario–Quebec border to solve a murder: David Bouchard [Patrick Huard], a rule-bending Sûreté du Québec detective, and Martin Ward [Colm Feore], a by-the-book Ontario Provincial Police investigator. The film follows their uneasy partnership as they navigate not only a grisly case but also deep-seated language divides, cultural biases, and stubborn professional habits. From the start, their dynamic is built on friction and a reluctant reliance on each other’s strengths, creating a tension that keeps turning the investigation forward even when personal tensions threaten to derail it.

The victim is identified as Benoit Brisset, a hockey executive, and the clues increasingly point toward a tangle of people and motives. The trail leads them to Luc Therrien at a roadside bar, and after a violent confrontation, they end up imprisoning him in the trunk of Bouchard’s car. Bouchard has promised to attend his daughter Gabrielle’s ballet recital, so he drives to the show and parks the car in front, Therrien trapped inside. But fate complicates the plan: just when the recital ends, a tow truck drags the car away from the no-parking zone, and in the scramble to chase the driver, the car explodes in a blaze of smoke and heat, throwing the investigation into chaos and raising the stakes dramatically.

With their prime witness dead, the pair searches Therrien’s home and uncovers a large marijuana grow-op in the basement, along with another body, a former hockey team owner named Grossbut. A laser tripwire triggers in the chaos, Bouchard triggers a bomb that blows the place to bits, and the ensuing smoke-filled delirium leaves them laughing uncontrollably as they battle the aftereffects of the fumes. The fallout is swift: Chief Roger Leboeuf disciplines them harshly and removes them from the case as the shock of what they’ve witnessed sinks in and their professional judgment wobbles.

A new pattern emerges as the detectives realize the killer’s method: a sequence of tattooed victims, each marked by a clue to the next target. Every murder is tied in some way to major league hockey, and the film leans into thinly disguised parodies of hockey teams, owners, and players rather than depicting the real league directly. The detectives race to anticipate the next strike, expecting to find Pickleton as the next victim—only for him to vanish before they can reach him. They go public, appearing on a hockey broadcast to issue a warning to the hockey community, and the Tattoo Killer calls into the show, provoking a tense on-air confrontation that spirals into a chaotic brawl with the neurotic anchor Tom Berry when they try to hang up.

Ward is then attacked in his own home by a masked assailant, who turns out to be Therrien, while Bouchard’s personal life collides with the case when he has a sexual encounter with Ward’s sister Iris. The stakes rise again when the Tattoo Killer kidnaps Gabrielle in exchange for the league commissioner Harry Buttman, triggering a final confrontation that pits the two officers against a deeply distorted fanatic. The investigation slowly unravels the killer’s motive: a bilingual, portly hockey fan who believes the sport is a Canadian national symbol being corrupted by ownership moves to American venture capital. He enlists Therrien to carry out the gruesome murders, using the tattoo signatures as a signature of his philosophy and revenge against what he sees as the desecration of the game.

As the plan unfolds, the detectives attempt to bargain for Gabrielle’s release, offering Therrien in exchange for her safety. The tactic backfires, inflaming the killer’s resolve and culminating in a brutal showdown. Ward distracts the killer while Bouchard frees Gabrielle, and after a ferocious struggle, the killer meets his end when one of his own explosives detonates in his vicinity. In the aftermath, the news report closes the chapter on the case with a twist of irony: Buttman announces a rule that no hockey teams will be moved, underscoring the film’s satirical nod to national identity and the sport’s stubborn hold on Canadian culture.

Throughout the film, the cross-border crime story is paced with a steady flow of clues, misdirections, and character moments. The relationship between bilingual law enforcement officers—fraught with humor, stubborn pride, and occasional tenderness—adds a human center to the procedural intrigue. Gabrielle’s rescue and the final showdown offer a cathartic release after a series of escalating threats, punctuating the narrative with a reminder that, beneath the parody and high-stakes suspense, the bonds of family and loyalty can still guide the most unlikely partners through the darkest moments.
