Bon Cop Bad Cop

On a border sign marking the Ontario–Quebec boundary, a body is found hanging, triggering a cross-border investigation that forces two very different police forces to collaborate.

David Bouchard, a rule-bending, francophone detective for the Sûreté du Québec, teams up with Martin Ward, a by-the-book anglophone detective from the Ontario Provincial Police, to solve the murder. Together, they must navigate not only the case but also their own professional and cultural differences, challenging each other’s prejudices as they learn to work as a unified pair.

The investigation identifies the first victim as Benoit Brisset, a hockey executive, which leads the partners to a roadside bar where they confront Luc Therrien. After a tense fight, they imprison Therrien in the trunk of Bouchard’s car. Bouchard has promised to attend his daughter Gabrielle’s ballet recital, so he drives to the venue with Therrien still trapped, unaware that trouble is about to follow him home.

At the recital, an unsettling series of events unfolds. When the car is towed away from a no-parking zone and the tow truck disappears, the chase ends in devastation as the car explodes. With their prime witness dead, the detectives search Therrien’s house and uncover a large marijuana grow-op running beneath the surface, along with the corpse of a former hockey team owner, Michel Grossbut. A laser tripwire is triggered by Bouchard, a bomb explodes, and the house catches fire, forcing the two cops to escape amid the thick fumes.

Their tug-of-war with authority continues as they’re disciplined by their chief and briefly removed from the case after breaking into hysterical laughter from the lingering marijuana haze. The case widens as the duo discovers a chilling pattern: the killer tattoos each victim, leaving a clue to the next murder, with every crime tied in some way to major league hockey—albeit through thinly veiled parodies of real teams, owners, and players.

The pursuit intensifies as they anticipate the next victim, Pickleton, who instead vanishes. Ward and Bouchard go on air during a hockey broadcast to warn the community, only to face a taunting call from the “Tattoo Killer.” A volatile on-air brawl erupts with the show’s host, Tom Berry, when the detectives try to end the call.

Ward is later attacked in his home by a masked assailant who turns out to be Therrien, and in a parallel turn, Bouchard becomes intimate with Ward’s sister, Iris Iris Ward. The Tattoo Killer then abducts Gabrielle in exchange for League commissioner Harry Buttman, setting up a dramatic confrontation that tests both officers to their limits.

The truth finally emerges: the killer is a bilingual, portly hockey fan acting under the direction of a sadistic, fanatical desire to reclaim hockey as a Canadian national symbol. He believes the game is being desecrated by moves to shift ownership of Canadian teams to American venture capitalists. Therrien is coerced into carrying out the killings as part of this plan, including the signature tattoos, as a revenge against the league.

The detectives attempt to reason with him—arguing that hockey is merely a game—and they exchange Therrien for Gabrielle, only to be met with renewed fury. In the ensuing struggle, the Tattoo Killer kills Therrien and, as Buttman is handed over, Ward distracts the killer while Bouchard frees Gabrielle. After a brutal fight, the killer is blown up by one of his own explosives planted in his pocket by Ward.

As the credits roll, a news report announces that Buttman will implement a rule prohibiting the relocation of hockey teams. The case closes on a note that hockey, while deeply cherished, remains a game, and the two officers’ partnership—once defined by friction—has proven capable of solving a puzzle that spans borders, languages, and loyalties.
