In 1910 New York, Raoul De Baere [George Raft] is a coal miner who dreams of becoming a dancer and tries to persuade his brother Mike DeBaere [William Frawley] to manage him. He envisions moving to Europe and opening a nightclub in Paris, but his early efforts are rough until he partners with a dancer named Lucy [Gloria Shea], and the duo start turning heads dancing at a beer garden in New Jersey. Lucy is drawn to Raoul, yet he remains intent on keeping business separate from romance, letting ambition guide his steps as the two build a steady, growing act.

Raoul travels to Paris, where he makes a living dancing with older women in nightclubs. He eventually finds a new partner, Leona [Frances Drake], and they perform as a team in successive club gigs. Leona longs for romance, but Raoul resists any deep entanglement, keeping the line between professional partnership and personal longing. When Leona threatens to quit, Mike steps in with his own romantic involvement, courting her despite her jealousy and escalating wage demands, which adds tension to the already fraught dynamic among the dancers.

Former Ziegfeld chorus girl Helen Hathaway [Carole Lombard] convinces Raoul to team with her, and he leaves his Paris work to go to England with Helen, effectively discarding Leona. Raoul is instantly drawn to Helen, yet he makes her promise to reject his advances. She agrees, and the two forge a powerful, athletic dance partnership that captures audiences’ imagination. They appear on the bill with fan dancer Annette [Sally Rand], who wants to team with Raoul and hints that Lord Coray is romantically interested in Helen. During a holiday in Belgium, Raoul and Helen begin an intense affair, complicating the already delicate web of loyalties among the performers.

Raoul opens a nightclub in Paris and conceives a daring, athletic routine with Helen to be set to Ravel’s Boléro. The debut is interrupted by news of the outbreak of World War I, which unsettles the crowd and disrupts the premiere. Raoul halts the show and delivers a patriotic address, promising he will not dance again until the war ends in a gesture meant to rally the audience. Helen, realizing the publicity was calculated, leaves him to serve as a nurse and to marry Coray [Ray Milland], which creates a personal and professional rift between them.

Raoul and Mike serve in the army during the conflict, and Raoul is wounded in action. On Armistice Day, a doctor warns that any further exertion could kill him, casting a shadow over the prospect of a renewed career. After the war, Raoul tries to reconnect with Helen and restart his dancing life, but she remains unreachable. He finds new partnership with Annette and they once again form a team, renewing the spark that first drew him to the stage.

Raoul reopens his Paris nightclub, staging the Boléro-driven performance that once defined his partnership with Helen. On opening night, he discovers Annette is drunk and unable to perform, yet Helen is in the audience and agrees to step in for Annette, leaving Raoul hopeful that Helen might rejoin him in the future. They dance to thunderous applause, but the routine is physically exhausting for Raoul. Before they can stage an encore, he collapses and dies, leaving a lasting impression of courage, artistry, and the fragile line between ambition and fate.
