Alfie Alan Price has reinvented himself as a London-to-France heavy goods vehicle driver, teaming up with Bakey Paul Copley to haul freight across the Channel. The film opens with Bakey steering the truck through customs in France, while Alfie indulges in a tryst with an English hitchhiker, Bird Nell Campbell, in the back of the vehicle—only to be interrupted when a customs officer spots her topless.
Arriving at their destination, Alfie notices a woman in a sports car and the two engage in a bold, impulsive race that ends only when the police intervene. He soon finds a moment of flirtation with the married waitress Louise Rula Lenska, who escorts him to her apartment. During the night, her husband returns from a fishing trip, while Bakey sits outside in the truck and blasts the horn as a warning.
Later, Alfie catches up with the woman from the race and learns her name is Abby Jill Townsend, a refined magazine editor. When she turns him down, he begins to stalk her, and after another car chase, she finally agrees to a date. Alfie, thrilled, moves ahead with plans—only to confront erectile dysfunction and depart her apartment in a fit of anger.
The setback pushes him to open his little black book and reach out to women with whom he has a casual history. Yet some encounters bring trouble of their own, including consequences from Norma and the anger of Fay’s husband when Alfie’s wallet is found under their bed. With Fay’s encouragement, Alfie apologizes to Abby for storming out and asks her for a proper dinner.
During a holiday in France, Alfie tells Abby a truth he rarely shares with his lovers: that he loves her and wants to marry her. She initially refuses, and his reaction is blunt and volatile as he presses the point, questioning what could be wrong with her that she won’t agree.
Back in the UK, Alfie endures a minor accident and becomes bed-ridden. Abby visits to apologize for the earlier rejection and to convey a sense of acceptance, though she must depart soon on a work trip. As Abby leaves for the airport, Claire Annie Ross, Alfie’s older neighbor, learns from another neighbour that he’s immobile and lets herself into his flat, pouring tea. When Alfie comments on Claire’s perfume, she reveals her feelings by slipping into his bed and removing her top, forcing a tense moment of resistance.
Alfie then catches Abby at the airport and the couple decide to marry the next day. In the morning, he waits for her at the terminal, unaware that her plane has crashed with no survivors. He drives to the wreckage, overwhelmed with grief and unable to reconcile the loss with the life they hoped to build together.
