Blood Freak

On the Florida highway, Herschell, a Vietnam veteran, helps a young woman named Angel whose car has broken down. Angel brings him to her home, hoping it will help him get back on his feet. Along the way, he learns that Anne lives there with many local friends.

At Angel's home, Anne and several local friends are smoking pot. Herschell refuses to partake, honoring Angel's warning. Anne continues trying to seduce him, creating tension around his stay.

Angel decides that Herschell should stay with them until he gets back on his feet. She believes a period of stability is what he needs to restart his life. Herschell agrees to stay and begin the slow road to recovery.

Anne encourages Herschell to smoke a joint, flouting his resolve. He succumbs and takes his first hit, marking the start of his drug addiction within the group. The shift compounds the danger around his attempt to reform.

Herschell gets a job at a local turkey farm, where two scientists are running experiments on turkey meat. He meets the scientists and becomes a candidate for a testing program. The environment foreshadows the sinister twist to come.

To recruit him, the scientists bribe Herschell with more marijuana to participate in a test by eating turkey meat. He agrees, hoping the drug will help his life get back on track. The bribe reveals the exploitation behind the experiment.

Herschell consumes the turkey and immediately passes out on the farm. He suffers a seizure, and the scientists worry about being implicated in a possible death. Their concern drives them to dispose of his body to cover their tracks.

When Herschell awakens, he finds his head transformed into a giant turkey's head and realizes his addiction has darkened into bloodlust. He believes he now craves the blood of fellow addicts. The bizarre transformation unfolds as a central hallucination tied to the drug abuse.

Herschell returns to Anne and asks for help, hoping she will intervene to break his addiction. At first, Anne agrees to assist him, indicating that there is a chance for intervention. The fragile alliance sets up the subsequent conflict.

Driven by his addiction, Herschell kills three people to appease his craving. The violence underscores the dangerous consequences of drug abuse spiraling out of control. Anne's response intensifies as she tries to stop him.

To prevent further harm, Anne appeals to two of her friends to help stop Herschell, ultimately planning to behead him with a machete. The plan reveals the depth of the danger and the lengths she will go to salvage him.

As the beheading unfolds, the action cuts to Herschell waking up in the woods—the entire turkey-headed sequence being a hallucination. The film reveals the brutal nature of his addiction without actually killing him at that moment.

The owner of the turkey farm discovers Herschell, prompting him to inform Angel at the rehab center. This connection reopens the possibility of getting him help and accountability.

Angel travels to collect Herschell, urges him to pray to God for strength, and escorts him to the rehab center to begin recovery from his addiction. The intervention marks the turning point toward healing.

In the final scenes, Herschell begins to recover and is reunited with a joyous Anne. The film closes with hopeful notes as redemption seems possible. Director Brad Grinter makes a periodic cameo to offer commentary between scenes.
