In the spring of 1945, Heinrich, a decorated Wehrmacht veteran, is captured after attempting to desert the Nazi forces. Facing execution at the hands of the Waffen-SS, he is confronted by the zealous Lieutenant Colonel Von Starnfeld, marking a pivotal moment in his war experience.

As Heinrich hangs, his life appears to be at its end. However, a twist of fate occurs when Elsa intervenes and manages to save him, taking him to a safe farmhouse away from the reach of the SS.

Elsa, driven by her deep-seated hatred for the Nazis, provides refuge to Heinrich at her farmhouse. She learns of Heinrich's yearning to reunite with his daughter, a lone survivor of the war's devastation, which deepens their connection.

In the nearby village of Sonnenberg, SS forces commence a frantic search for hidden treasures belonging to the Jewish Lowenstein family. This search is spearheaded by Dorfler, who intensifies the atmosphere of fear and tension in the village.

During a looting expedition, Heinrich is cornered in the attic by Dorfler's squad. A tense confrontation ensues, resulting in a fray where the SS soldiers are defeated, but Dorfler manages to escape, leaving Heinrich in a precarious position.

After Heinrich and Elsa flee into the forest, Paule, Elsa's brother, returns home for his beloved dairy cow. In a tragic turn, he is captured by the remaining SS forces, casting a shadow over their escape.

Dorfler brutally subjects Paule to torment in front of the villagers, escalating the tension in Sonnenberg. The stark display of cruelty reaches its climax when Paule is dragged to the church steeple, facing a gruesome execution.

As hope dwindles, Paule takes a bold stand against his captors, but chaos unfolds tragically leading to his demise. This act of defiance highlights the brutality and despair of the war-torn environment around them.

After suffering severe injuries, Heinrich finds refuge in a local priest's residence. The priest reveals the story of the Lowenstein family's hidden gold, believed to be crucial for the villagers' survival amidst the chaos.

The mayor of Sonnenberg devises a plan to reveal the location of the hidden gold, but his intentions are thwarted by Sonja, who holds allegiance to the Nazis. This sets the stage for conflict within the village.

As pressures mount from Starnfeld's advances on her, Elsa plays a risky game for survival. When the moment presents itself, she manages to dispatch Starnfeld, showcasing her courage in the face of danger.

With the SS forces regrouping, Heinrich tries to barter for Elsa's freedom by leveraging the thought of gold. However, the sudden rise of Dorfler to power leads to a climactic confrontation that draws everyone into a fierce battle.

In the midst of battle, betrayal emerges when Sonja undermines Elsa's efforts. The struggle culminates in violence, securing both victory and loss as the last of the SS forces are defeated.

Finally, with the SS defeated, Heinrich and Elsa seize their chance to escape. The final moments are tense as they rush away, leaving behind the war that has caused them immense suffering.

In a poignant conclusion, Heinrich and Elsa arrive in Hagen, leading to an emotional reunion between Heinrich and his daughter. This moment symbolizes hope and the possibility of new beginnings amidst the scars of war.
