As Hong Kong Special Agent Lin Dong (Jackie Chan) races towards the hospital in a frantic attempt to save his daughter Xixi from her grave battle with leukemia, a distressing message from his trusted companion Xiao Su interrupts his haste. The message reveals that Dr. James (Kim Gyngell), a critical witness in their ongoing investigation, is in imminent danger. With steadfast resolve and a heart heavy with responsibility, Lin makes a split-second decision to divert his mission away from the hospital, opting instead for a confrontation with Xiao Su and their elite team.

Prior to their arrival, Dr. James subjects himself to an enigmatic chemical mixture while connected to a mechanical heart device. Just as they attempt to rescue him, they are besieged by a unit of mercenaries, led by the chilling figure of Andre (Callan Mulvey), whose terrifying appearance seems to leap right out of a nightmare. Caught in the torrential storm of chaos, Lin suffers severe injuries, while Xiao Su is left battered and bruised. In a tense moment, as Andre prepares to seize Dr. James, Lin acts decisively, ramming his car into Andre and pinning him against an oil tank. However, Andre miraculously survives the impact. In a desperate maneuver, Lin ignites a nearby oil tank, leading to a massive explosion that leaves both men reeling in its wake.

As Lin lies incapacitated, he receives the devastating news from Dr. James over the phone: Xixi has succumbed to her illness in the hospital—a heart-wrenching blow that might crush anyone's spirit. Unbeknownst to them, both Lin and Andre are destined for a shocking resurrection thirteen years later in Sydney, Australia. The plot thickens with the arrival of author Rick Rogers (Damien Garvey), a man who has just released a bestseller titled Bleeding Steel, which fictionalizes the tale of a U.S. Marine implanted with a mechanical heart. He soon finds himself at the mercy of a mysterious woman, Li Sen, who cunningly infiltrates his hotel room, sedates him, and downloads sensitive content from his computer related to his novel.

As if ghosting a film, a shadowy figure, the Woman in Black (Tess Haubrich), lurks in the background, hunting for the truth behind Rogers' inspiration for Bleeding Steel. When she engages in a heart-stopping confrontation in Rogers' suite, the bleak outcome sees Rogers meeting his demise. Promptly, chaos ensues as police sirens close in on them. The Woman in Black soon reports back to Andre at his advanced airship command facility, delivering news of the failed attempt to secure Lin and Li Sen. Andre adeptly identifies both subjects from grainy CCTV footage and sends the Woman to track Li Sen, only to discover their swift escape.

On another front, Nancy (a pivotal character with vivid nightmares relating to a dark laboratory) finds herself drawn helplessly into this turbulent conflict as she seeks refuge in the embrace of a spiritualist who has faced similar horrors concerning Rogers. As the Woman in Black zeroes in on Nancy, Lin Dong and Li Sen come together to rescue her from impending danger. Little do they realize that Nancy is not as ordinary as she seems—she is actually Xixi, reborn by Dr. James' revolutionary human enhancement experiments, now armed with the ability to regenerate, possibly granting her immortality.

However, her return from death has a price; her memories were erased, forcing her into an orphanage for her protection. Under the careful watch of Lin and the old unit members, Xixi’s intricate saga unfolds. Unbeknownst to her, the nightmares that haunt her mind are remnants of Dr. James’ memories, which were inadvertently intertwined with her own during her revival. Compounding the complexity is the fact that Andre—a former soldier turned mercenary—is another subject of Dr. James’ experiments gone wrong, leading to murderous impulses after he became aware of his own deteriorating condition.

Ultimately, all roads lead back to Dr. James, who, consumed by his own creations, passes away, marking Xixi the last survivor in a deadly game of human augmentation. With Lin leading Xixi and Li Sen to his haven, an advanced vault ensures her protection. However, a visit to the spiritualist leads Lin to the grim realization of her untimely end. As Xixi, unwittingly holding the key to a nefarious plot, flees to an abandoned estate of Dr. James, she uncovers not only cherished recollections of her father but also a hidden bank vault key.

As the threads of fate weave tighter, the Woman in Black intercepts Lin and Xiao Su, whisking Xixi away to Andre’s high-tech airship, plunging her into his twisted laboratory. As events unfold, Li Sen successfully breaks free, joining Lin and Xiao Su as they rally to reach the bank vault, where they capture the Woman in Black mid-robbery. This leads to a critical discovery—a video camera that holds evidence of Andre's actions and his desperate need for Xixi's blood to regain his lost vitality.

In a gripping climax aboard Andre's airship, he injects Xixi's blood into himself, attempting to regain his previous strength as Lin, Xiao Su, and Li Sen mount a daring rescue. Intense battles erupt, pushing all involved to the brink as they confront the monstrous mercenary. Lin, invigorated by Xixi's blood from his earlier encounter, taps into newfound strength, leading to a fierce showdown between him and Andre. In a final act of defiance, Lin tears Andre's heart from his chest, ensuring his demise.

With the airship set to explode, Lin makes a desperate leap, trusting that Xiao Su and Xixi’s parachute will catch him in time to avoid the flames. As they embrace the warmth of camaraderie and victory, Lin learns that Li Sen is entwined in a complex vendetta against Andre, rooted in his traumatic past. Li's affections for Xixi are revealed, shedding light on the connections that bind them.

Meanwhile, across distant landscapes, Li Sen clings to life, grappling with the repercussions of his actions while considering a dark deal involving the very tape that catalyzed this odyssey. He turns down an offer, his fragmented humanity glimpsing through in a poignant moment amid chaos. Thus, the tale intertwines hope, love, vengeance, and the quest for identity, resonating through the very core of its survivors.

Q1

Why did Lin Dong leave his dying daughter to rescue Dr. James?

Lin Dong chose to rescue Dr. James because the doctor was a crucial witness in their ongoing investigation against Andre and the criminal conspiracy. Although his daughter Xixi was dying from leukemia, Lin felt compelled to protect the evidence that could bring down the villains responsible for threatening his family. This tragic decision haunts him throughout the film, especially when he later learns Xixi died while he was diverted.

Foreshadowing: The opening scene establishes Lin's burden as both a father and an investigator, showing his conflicting loyalties.

Q2

How did Lin Dong and Andre both survive the oil tank explosion?

Both Lin Dong and Andre were resurrected thirteen years later in Sydney through Dr. James' human enhancement experiments. The film implies that Dr. James, who was working on a project to create enhanced humans with regenerative abilities, used his technology to bring them back. Andre became a super-soldier with extreme strength and healing, while Lin gained enhanced abilities that proved crucial in the final battle.

Q3

What is the Bleeding Steel project?

Bleeding Steel refers to Dr. James' secret project involving mechanical hearts and human enhancement experiments. The project aimed to create enhanced soldiers by implanting mechanical hearts and using experimental chemicals to grant regenerative abilities. Rick Rogers' bestselling novel 'Bleeding Steel' fictionalizes these events, portraying a US Marine with a mechanical heart, which attracts dangerous attention to the real story.

Foreshadowing: The novel's content becomes a target for Andre and the Woman in Black, showing how closely it mirrors the actual experiments.

Who is Nancy and how is she connected to Xixi?

Nancy is actually Xixi, Lin Dong's daughter who died from leukemia. Dr. James revived her through his human enhancement experiments, granting her regenerative abilities that could potentially grant immortality. However, her memories were completely erased as protection, and she was placed in an orphanage under a new identity. The nightmares she experiences are actually Dr. James' memories that transferred to her during the revival process.

Foreshadowing: Nancy's vivid nightmares of a dark laboratory directly hint at her connection to Dr. James' experiments.

Q5

Why does Andre need Xixi's blood to survive?

Andre is another failed subject of Dr. James' experiments. After being enhanced with mechanical parts and regenerative abilities, his body began deteriorating, and he requires a constant supply of the enhanced blood to maintain his strength and vitality. Xixi's blood, being the successful product of Dr. James' work, contains the regenerative properties Andre desperately needs, which is why he captures her on his airship to extract it.

Foreshadowing: Andre's frantic need for Xixi's blood in the climax connects to his earlier weakened state and his violent outbursts caused by his deteriorating condition.

Q6

Why were Xixi's memories erased after her revival?

Dr. James erased Xixi's memories to protect her from the traumatic knowledge of her own creation through the experiments. By giving her a fresh start as Nancy in an orphanage, he hoped to shield her from the dangerous people pursuing the project. This also prevented her from remembering Lin Dong, which kept her safely hidden from Andre and others who might use her as leverage.

Foreshadowing: The film establishes early on that protecting Xixi requires keeping her unaware of her true origins.

Q7

How did Lin Dong gain his enhanced strength during the final battle?

Lin Dong received a blood transfusion from Xixi earlier in the film, which gave him enhanced physical abilities similar to those possessed by Andre. This newfound strength allowed him to match Andre's superhuman capabilities during their climactic confrontation on the airship. Without these abilities, Lin would have been overpowered by Andre's enhanced strength.

Foreshadowing: The blood transfer between Lin and Xixi foreshadows their shared enhanced abilities in the final fight.

Q8

What is Li Sen's connection to Andre and why does she help Lin?

Her affection for Xixi is genuine, as she sees in the girl a chance at redemption and protecting innocence. Li Sen joins Lin and Xiao Su to bring down Andre not just for justice, but to free herself from the darkness of her past.

Foreshadowing: Li Sen's complex motivations and her refusal to accept a dark deal at the end hint at her deeper backstory with Andre.

Q9

Why is Rick Rogers' novel 'Bleeding Steel' dangerous?

Rick Rogers' novel 'Bleeding Steel' closely mirrors Dr. James' real experiments with mechanical hearts and human enhancement. The Woman in Black and Andre pursue Rogers because his book contains sensitive information about the project, potentially exposing their conspiracy. Li Sen later downloads content from Rogers' computer related to his research, making the book a dangerous link to the truth.

Foreshadowing: The Woman in Black specifically targets Rogers to prevent the real story from being exposed.
