In the year 2027, illegal androids have become widespread and criminals increasingly fuse themselves with cybernetic gear, creating beings that feel almost human but are capable of inhuman acts. Alex Rain is a world-weary assassin and bounty hunter working for the LAPD, trudging through a city where hardware and humanity blur into a perilous edge. On a routine mission, he runs afoul of a militant faction called The Red Army Hammerheads and is nearly killed by their survivor, Rosaria. She tries to convince him that he is nothing but a machine, but he pushes back, insisting that Eighty-six point five percent [of him] is still human.

Months of cybernetic reconstruction pass as he recovers, and the hunt for Rosaria leads him into Baja, where he finally ends her life. Soon after, his old handlers reappear with a bombshell: his former lover Jared—an android—and another android, Sam, have surfaced. This return pushes Alex to reconsider his independence; he deserts the LAPD and becomes a freelance hustler and triggerman, though his former bosses clearly still have him under observation. His chief, Farnsworth, orchestrates one last mission: Jared has allegedly stolen critical security data about an upcoming Japan–United States summit, and must be stopped before she exposes the information to the Hammerheads. He is told a bomb was implanted in his heart during repairs and is given three days to locate Jared before she meets the Hammerheads’ leader, Angie-Liv. Then he’s dumped into Shang-Loo on Java, used as bait to flush out Jared.

Behind the surface, the Hammerheads are not merely fighting for autonomy; they aim to shape humanity’s future by infiltrating the upper echelons of power with a newly designed android that copies minds into synthetic bodies. Farnsworth, it turns out, has already been replaced by a version of himself, reimagined as [Sam]. Jared becomes the key antagonist they must neutralize, and Alex’s real mission shifts toward extracting her from the web of synthetic manipulation. The chase heats up as he checks into a local hotel, only to be intercepted by Julian, a cyborg who acts as Jared’s courier. She warns him that an LAPD strike team led by Farnsworth is closing in to strike at the Hammerheads and Jared, complicating his precarious alliance.

Jared’s memory core becomes the focal point of the conflict: she was badly wounded escaping LA, and her mind must be salvaged. Julian removes a surveillance device from Alex’s eye, then injects him with a digital scrambler to keep the bomb from detonating and hands over Jared’s memory core, enabling dialogue with her. The strike team storms the hotel, and Julian sacrifices herself to buy Alex time to escape. He then links up with a local ally, Max Impact, the sister of Rosaria, who acts as both guide and operative for the Hammerheads. Although Max’s grudge against Alex runs deep, her loyalty to the freedom fighters is stronger, and she helps steer him toward a confrontation with the core group.

With Angie-Liv urging him to join their cause, Alex dives deeper into the Hammerhead operation. The strike team closes in again, triggering a brutal chase through a dilapidated city where most Hammerheads fall to Farnsworth’s men. Angie-Liv is among those killed, and Alex’s resolve hardens as he saves Max from disaster, a moment that finally earns her forgiveness. In a climactic face-off, he shoots Farnsworth with a grenade launcher, seemingly ending the Commissioner’s life, though the struggle reveals how much of Farnsworth’s humanity remains within his mechanical shell.

The action then shifts to a hidden hangar where Yoshiro, a surviving Hammerhead, awaits. As they launch their escape craft, an aerodyne, Farnsworth—the cyborg mastermind—emerges in his full endoskeleton form. Alex defeats him but sustains grave injuries and comes to terms with the extent of his own synthetic parts. He transports Jared’s core to another Hammerhead facility to dismantle the labs that clone people, a risky move that effectively erases Jared’s memory from the core—an act that amounts to killing her for good. Wounded, heavily bandaged, and temporarily blind, Alex and Max share a bittersweet farewell as they prepare for a perilous future together.

In a final push toward justice, Alex infiltrates Los Angeles once more to pursue the remaining synthetic agents. He corners Farnsworth’s right-hand man, Germaine, on the helipad at the LAPD headquarters. Though Germaine argues that total annihilation of the synthetics is impossible, Alex’s resolve is unwavering, and he shoots him to end the threat. Jared’s parting memory reveals a closure about Farnsworth’s true legacy, though the letter left for Alex hints at reconciliation rather than vengeance. Walking away with a renewed partnership with Max, Alex looks toward a long road ahead, joking about how they might smuggle his synthetic body through airport security—“Piece by piece, Max…”
