In 1960, Major William Allison blasts the X-80 into sub-orbital space and brings it back with radio contact lost. He lands at a base that seems deserted and crumbling, its hangars quiet and empty. Before he can process what he’s seeing, the world tilts—sound fades, darkness closes in—and he slips into unconsciousness, only to awaken inside a hidden, underground metropolis known as the Citadel. There, the atmosphere is eerie and oppressive, and the people he encounters communicate in a way that unsettles him: most residents are deaf and mute, and the ruling figures speak softly but decisively.

The Citadel’s enigmatic ruler, a man known as the Supreme Vladimir Sokoloff, governs with a cool, calculating calm. His second-in-command, simply called the Captain Boyd ‘Red’ Morgan, governs alongside him, and together they maintain a fragile balance. The two are the only inhabitants who can speak or hear; everyone else, including the Supreme’s granddaughter Trirene Darlene Tompkins, is rendered deaf-mute, and fertility among the citizens is almost non-existent. Trirene’s telepathic abilities allow her to read Allison’s thoughts, and she quickly senses that he is not a threat or a spy—an impression that earns him a wary, guarded welcome from the Supreme and the Captain, even as the Captain suspects his motives.

Yet danger lurks inside the Citadel walls. The underground is patrolled by a group of bald, ferocious mutants who believe themselves the last survivors of a “cosmic plague” and who blame the Citadel’s residents for their misery. A brutal encounter leaves Allison battered and confounded, but the mutants’ brutal claims spark questions he cannot ignore. The Captain eventually frees him, recognizing that Trirene’s telepathic empathy has softened the Supreme’s suspicions. To help him understand, Trirene unveils photographs that illuminate the Citadel’s layered history and introduces him to the so‑called “‘scapes”—a trio of time-travelers who explain the true reach of Allison’s journey.

The “‘scapes” include Captain Markova, a Russian officer from 1973, and General Kruse along with Professor Bourman, who arrived from distant colonies in 1994. The scientists warn Allison that stepping into their world could alter eras—and not always for the better. They reveal that Allison’s presence in the Citadel is already a consequence of a time-slip that has brought him to the year 2024 in their time frame, explaining how nuclear fallout in 1971 eroded Earth’s atmosphere and allowed lethal cosmic rays to surge, crippling births and reshaping civilization. Markova urges caution and emphasizes that the Supreme intends to use Allison as a vehicle to repopulate the Citadel, but the scientists and the Captain each urge him to resist manipulations and seek a genuine way back to his own time.

As Allison begins to form a cautious bond with Trirene, their connection deepens into a romance that complicates the mission. The plan evolves into a dangerous bid to alter the past, with the aim of preventing catastrophe altogether. The Captain initially supports this, but Kruse and Bourman have their own agendas. Markova’s insistence on joining Allison in returning to 1973 clashes with Bourman’s and Kruse’s ambitions, and soon a gunfight erupts among the time-traveling figures. Kruse shoots Markova, while Bourman knocks Kruse unconscious, revealing his own intent to hijack the X-80 for a personal voyage home.

Tragedy strikes when a stray bullet pierces Trirene, cutting short the most hopeful thread of Allison’s mission. Grief-stricken, Allison carries her lifeless body back to the Supreme, who is devastated by both his beloved granddaughter’s death and the looming doom of his people now that fertility has reached a nadir. Yet in a surprising turn, the Supreme directs Allison toward a hidden passage that promises a glimmer of hope beyond the Citadel’s walls. With Trirene’s ring still on his finger—a token the Supreme secretly placed there—Allison is returned to his own era, the journey itself chronicling an impossible odyssey.

Back in the present, Major Allison recounts the unbelievable voyage in a debriefing, his body aged far beyond his years. Officials arrive, skeptical yet curious, as he pleads for them to heed the warning bells of a future shaped by his experiences. In a final, poignant gesture, he passes along Trirene’s ring—an emblem of the fragile thread connecting hope across time—and urges the watchers to consider the possibilities that lie ahead. Secretary Lloyd Patterson [James Ike Altgens] concludes with a measured line that hints at a future still unwritten, leaving the door ajar for the implications of Allison’s tale to be absorbed, debated, and possibly acted upon.

This tale blends hard science with a quiet, unspoken romance, building a world where a lone pilot’s return to the past could alter the destiny of a hidden society. It probes the cost of survival when science, loyalty, and love collide across centuries, and it asks whether hope can endure when generations rely on a single, fragile thread of possibility. The Citadel’s paradox—where the few can speak and the many cannot, where fertile ground exists only under specific conditions, and where time itself can be a weapon or a beacon—persists as a haunting reminder that the future is never fully within our control, even when courage and compassion push us toward a better path.
