Four astronauts returning from humanity’s first Mars mission are flung 552 years into the future by a time warp, crash‑landing on a 26th‑century Earth scarred by atomic war. The atmosphere is breathable, but the planet is split: disfigured mutants roam the surface like cavemen, while the surviving “normals” live in underground habitats, slowly dying from a shortage of water, air and sunlight.
