In 2019, a mysterious anomaly makes its presence known above Earth, causing widespread disruptions including communication failures and a power outage on the International Space Station (ISS). During this chaos, astronaut Jim Marcell goes missing, leading everyone to believe he is dead. The Head of Exploration Missions, Alex Grant, unveils that this anomaly, later dubbed ‘The Void’, is not a new phenomenon; it first appeared in 1990, where it was visible for two months before vanishing without a trace.
To investigate further, the Space Agency, led by Gillian Laroux, deploys probes into The Void. Unfortunately, communication with these probes quickly fails, but data analysis suggests that this strange occurrence might be a wormhole harboring a planet-like entity on the other side. Cosmologist Jessica Johnson proposes that this could represent a significant first contact scenario. Despite facing pushback from her colleagues, Laroux is determined to proceed and secures funding for a complete expedition. However, her aspirations are dampened by the views of astrophysicist Professor Jakob Brukiehm, who warns that sending a crew into The Void would be perilous due to gravitational concerns, advocating instead for robotics or probes.
As tension mounts, unusual orbs begin to populate the sky, and The Void emits ominous waves. A covert military organization comes forward, offering their advanced robotics technology, known as Human 2.0, which was developed to integrate human brains with synthetic bodies for enhanced soldier capabilities. The military claims that this technology is essential for sending an astronaut safely into The Void.
Among the candidates for the project, drone pilot and wheelchair user Carl Roberts is chosen, but tragically, the procedure to merge his brain with a synthetic body fails, resulting in his death. In a moment of brave resolve, Jessica Johnson steps up as the next volunteer, and this time, the brain-to-body fusion is successful. Additionally, the military creates a Human 2.0 soldier equipped with concealed weapons to accompany her on this daring mission.
Upon launching into The Void, Johnson describes witnessing captivating lights; however, shortly after, contact is lost. Five days later, the mission unexpectedly returns, but only Johnson is present in the capsule, with the Human 2.0 soldier missing. The capsule appears to have aged significantly as though it had been navigating through time.
Once Johnson regains consciousness, she’s placed in quarantine where scientists try to extract memories from her mind. They uncover that she has accumulated several years of memories from her brief time in The Void, far surpassing the duration of her mission. As tensions escalate on Earth and military forces start attacking The Spheres, Johnson reveals what happened after the chaotic communication blackout. She describes a brilliant light and the moment the Human 2.0 soldier inexplicably vanished from the craft. She recalls seeing the soldier, who seemed frightened and fixated on his arm, which unexpectedly detonated like a nuclear bomb. After losing consciousness, she found herself on another planet, where she encountered Marcell, who assured her that everything would be alright.
Despite skepticism from the Space Agency regarding Johnson’s accounts, Laroux holds onto hope that Marcell may still be alive and that The Void, alongside The Spheres, may not pose a threat. Just as Johnson awakens, catastrophic events unfold; the solar system faces destruction as debris targets Earth. However, The Spheres begin to shift and form a protective barrier around the planet, unveiling the truth that their presence has been grossly misunderstood as a threat rather than a safeguarding measure.
Ultimately, as The Void disappears, Marcell is discovered in the Arizona desert, safe but lacking any memory of the preceding events. In the aftermath of this ordeal, a new solar system emerges, unveiling an Earth-like planet that offers fresh hope for humanity. The film culminates with Human 2.0s on Earth 2.0 encountering the lifeforms that emerged from The Void, suggesting a new chapter for mankind ahead.
