Anu, a talented dancer, is deeply in love with Bharani, a flautist. Their relationship grows as they exchange letters, but her father's transfer to Bombay causes a distance. Anu's emotional connection with Bharani is central to her life at this stage.

When Anu's father falls seriously ill, Ramanathan, a colleague, comes forward to support them financially and emotionally. His support strengthens the bond between him and the family during this challenging time. Ramanathan's offer to marry Anu introduces a new dynamic.

Anu, unable to decide between her feelings for Bharani and Ramanathan's proposal, writes her final letter to Bharani. Receiving no reply, she accepts Ramanathan's marriage proposal and marries him. Soon after, her father tragically passes away.

After their marriage, Ramanathan reveals his chauvinistic, sadistic, and possessive personality. He pressures Anu to give up her dancing career and begins to suspect her fidelity, creating a hostile environment at home. His behavior becomes increasingly oppressive.
