Dr. Friedrich von Kammacher [Olaf Fønss] is a surgeon whose life is shaken when his wife develops a brain disorder and is institutionalized. On the suggestion of his parents, he leaves Denmark in search of relief and heads to Berlin, where he encounters a bright young dancer named Ingigerd Hahlstrom [Ida Orloff]. He becomes fond of her and quietly hopeful, yet she already has a devoted circle of admirers, so he eventually steps back, deciding to look for solace elsewhere. However, a lead later takes him to Paris, and from there he learns that Ingigerd and her father are bound for New York, prompting him to trail after them with a determination that hints at a deeper yearning.

Aboard the SS Roland, Von Kammacher discovers that Ingigerd is not alone in her world of admirers. He also crosses paths with a seasick Russian-Jewish woman and briefly faces the temptation of romance, but the social boundaries of their class stand in the way, keeping him anchored to his unspoken devotion to Ingigerd. The voyage takes a perilous turn when the Roland strikes an unseen obstacle, triggering catastrophic flooding that forces a desperate scramble for lifeboats. Von Kammacher finds Ingigerd unconscious in her cabin and carries her toward safety, yet the search for her father proves futile in the chaos. With the ship sinking rapidly and several passengers swept away by the waves, only a handful of lifeboats survive the dawn.

The group is spotted by the cargo liner Hjortholm and rescued, bringing them to New York. Von Kammacher tries to convey his love and a future together, but Ingigerd refuses to be tethered to any one man, choosing her own path for the moment. In the wake of the shipboard trauma, Von Kammacher’s attention shifts toward the world of art. He becomes drawn into an inviting gallery scene where he meets Eva Burns [Ebba Thomsen], a warm and generous sculptor whose friendship grows with him through shared conversations and quiet moments of understanding. Dr. Schmidt [Carl Lauritzen], a trusted friend, also offers him the use of a mountain cabin near Handon, hoping this change of scenery might restore his sense of peace.

In the tranquil isolation of the mountains, a telegram from Denmark arrives with the heartbreaking news that Von Kammacher’s wife has died. The news leaves him physically weak, and he falls into a period of illness and reflection. Eva steps in as a caretaker, tending to him with patience and kindness, and as she nurses him back to health, their bond deepens into something warmer and more hopeful. In this quiet, hopeful space, Friedrich discovers a sense of happiness again, imagining a future where Eva could be a loving partner and the mother of his children, closing a circle of healing that began in the chaos of his early vows and the promise of a second chance at life and love.
