Atlantis

Dr. Friedrich von Kammacher, whose wife suffers a brain disorder, is devastated and seeks respite far from home. He leaves Denmark at his parents' urging to recuperate and clear his mind. The journey begins with the plan to find relief before attempting to cope with the illness at home.

In Berlin, Friedrich meets Ingigerd Hahlstrom, a young dancer, and feels a growing fondness. However, she has many admirers, so he decides not to pursue her aggressively. The encounter leaves him both intrigued and cautious.

While in Paris he learns from a newspaper ad that Ingigerd will travel to New York with her father. Driven by longing, he resolves to follow her and buys a first-class ticket on the same liner, the SS Roland. The sense of pursuit returns with renewed intensity.

On the journey across the Atlantic, he discovers Ingigerd already has a boyfriend, and he backs down from pursuing her. The ship becomes a stage for complex emotions as he keeps his distance. He also encounters other passengers that foreshadow the danger ahead.

During the voyage, Friedrich treats a seasick Russian-Jewish woman and there is a fleeting sense of romantic possibility. Yet the social barrier between them and the ongoing pursuit of Ingigerd keep them apart. The moment underscores the constraints of class and propriety at sea.

The Roland strikes an unseen object, causing rapid flooding and panic aboard. Friedrich finds Ingigerd unconscious and carries her toward a lifeboat, searching for her father in vain. As the ship sinks, lifeboats fail and many passengers are lost, leaving only a small group afloat at daybreak.

The survivors are picked up by the cargo liner Hjortholm and brought to New York. Friedrich finally confesses his love for Ingigerd and envisions a life together, but she refuses to be tied down to one man. The heartbreak of rejection accompanies their separation.

In New York, Friedrich is drawn to the city's artistic circles and visits a gallery. He meets Eva Burns, a kind sculptor who becomes a friend and confidante. Their bond grows as he seeks distraction and healing.

Dr. Schmidt offers Friedrich a cabin in the Handon mountains to find peace and quiet. He accepts the retreat, hoping distance will restore his spirit. The seclusion opens space for reflection away from his recent grief.

While in the mountains, a telegram from Denmark arrives with the devastating news that his wife has died. The loss compounds his fragility and drives him toward illness.

Friedrich falls critically ill, and Eva dedicates herself to nursing him back to health in the mountain cabin. Her care brings them closer, and a quiet romance begins to blossom as he regains strength.

As health returns, Friedrich realizes Eva could be a good mother for his children and a partner for his life. Happiness returns to his world as their bond deepens, offering a new sense of family and belonging.
