A man brings Syrene, Leigh Christian, to a remote island, and she pays him with pearls. The islanders look inbred and bear oversized eyes, and they kill any intruders they find. The mood is tense, with every rustle of water and every distant cry hinting at dangers both human and supernatural.

Back on the mainland, Manuel the Barracuda, Vic Diaz, pays East Eddie, Sid Haig, who runs the piers, with the pearls. Eddie shows them to Logan, John Ashley, a local hustler, and together they decide to chase down the source of the pearls. Logan then meets Vic Mathias, Patrick Wayne, a boat owner, and the two strike a deal to use the vessel in their search. The arrangement blends scavenger instincts with nautical know-how, setting the stage for a journey that could redefine what they think is valuable and possible.

Dr. Katherine Vernon, Lenore Stevens, overhears the plan and approaches Logan with a calm insistence that the pearls be pursued for science. In a museum setting, she explains her motive—data, specimens, and a potential breakthrough—while Logan weighs the practical risks against the promise of knowledge. Vernon’s presence adds an uneasy scholarly weight to the expedition, hinting that the pearls’ allure extends beyond money and danger.

They set off for the island, confronting Manuel the Barracuda and pressing toward the hidden pearl beds. On the shore, they encounter Syrene and her people, who can move between land and sea with ease. Syrene agrees to guide them to the pearl beds, but she and her father, Nereus, want to mate Syrene with one of the group—specifically Vic. The journey deeper into the island’s waters uncovers beds of pearls, and the first mate is mysteriously killed as tension rises and loyalties are tested.

Vic is torn about staying, wanting to return to safer ground, but Logan and the others press on for one more dive. As the exploration continues, Syrene’s hold over Vic grows stronger, and he finds himself drawn into a dangerous attraction that blurs allegiance and judgment. The danger is not just physical but existential, as the island’s ancient powers seem to awaken around them.

Nereus decides that the outsiders must die, and a brutal struggle erupts as the group fights their way back toward their boat. Katherine is jumped by Syrene, a confrontation that underscores the stakes of their scientific quest and the peril the island poses to those who would study it. The encounter ends with Syrene killed, halting any immediate chance for the sea-people to propagate their lineage on the surface world. The heroes march toward the sea, a somber procession that features Logan lifting a blanket of pearls from Syrene’s funeral bier, a symbol of both mourning and possession.

Manuel arrives and tries to double-cross the surviving pearl hunters. A fierce clash follows, and the case of pearls is knocked overboard during the struggle.
