Katie Kampenfelt, an 18-year-old free spirit, embarks on a transformative journey of self-discovery as she decides to take a gap year before entering college. Her perceptive guidance counselor urges her to express her feelings, leading Katie to create an online persona named “Undiscovered Gyrl”. Through this anonymous platform, she begins to document her sexual encounters with various men, including Dan, a 30-something film enthusiast with a girlfriend, and Rory, her teenage boyfriend.

As Katie navigates her emotional landscape, she becomes attracted to Glen, a charming bookstore employee who soon becomes a friend and coworker. However, tensions arise when Katie’s mother disapproves of Glen due to his controversial past, ultimately compelling Katie to end their relationship before it truly begins.

Things take a sharp turn when Dan suddenly disappears from her life, leaving her feeling abandoned. It is only later that she discovers he is engaged to Martine, exacerbating her feelings of loss and rejection. During this tumultuous period, her steadfast friend, Jade, tries to lift her spirits by inviting her for a night out.

In search of stability, Katie takes a new job as a nanny for Paul, a Tufts alumnus who had previously interviewed her for college. This role not only provides her with much-needed financial support but also introduces her to Margaret, Paul’s wife, who offers invaluable insights into motherhood.

As time progresses, Katie attempts to reconnect with Dan, but his engagement shakes her to the core, leaving her heartbroken. Meanwhile, Rory’s relationship with Jade adds to her emotional burden, making her feel utterly abandoned.

As the year wraps up, Katie is surprised when her mother reveals that she has also found love. In search of comfort, she reaches out to Joel, an old friend and mentor, who is struggling with his own mental health challenges and on a break from his studies. This mutual support brings a sense of solace to Katie amid the chaos of her life.

Tragedy strikes when Affie, her father’s partner, suffers a devastating fall and eventually passes away, sending Katie into a spiral of grief. During this time, her unresolved feelings for Dan resurface, only to be complicated by the presence of Martine, prompting her to retreat yet again.

As Joel grows increasingly protective, misinterpreting a note from Paul as a sign of danger for Katie, he insists she seek professional help. This tension leads to darker themes when Katie discovers she is pregnant, and Joel’s own despair culminates in a devastating hospitalization attempt.

Returning home to gather her father’s belongings, Katie is engulfed by grief. With the weight of her emotions heavy upon her, she confides in Glen about her struggles. He reveals the truth behind his actions and offers her a safe haven to raise her child, suggesting a path toward redemption and a new start.

In a poignant conclusion, Katie updates her blog, marking the end of her online chronicles and signaling her entry into adulthood. The revelation that she is actually Amy Grantham adds another layer of mystery, especially as she receives a call from an unknown number just moments after her last post, a call that implies a significant shift in her life is about to unfold.

The film closes with a glimpse into the real lives of those Amy wrote about, revealing that while some of her exploits were indeed true, other aspects have been exaggerated or distorted. In a heart-wrenching finale, her mother, Carol Grantham, takes to the blog to plead for any information about Amy’s whereabouts, thereby inviting the audience to reflect on the blurred lines between reality and fiction in Amy’s tumultuous journey.
