Chellappan begins his journey as a fiercely dedicated Communist, working at Chacko's business and organizing strikes and pickets for the working class. His focus on political activism leads him to become a respected leader among laborers, though he neglects his family and abuses his wife Bhavani. His weak moral fiber and suspicions about his wife shape his relationships and actions early in the story.

After a period of activism, Chellappan is fired from his job by Chacko, which causes a confrontation in a bylane where he confronts Chacko. Troubled and suspicious, Chellappan's behavior results in police involvement, and he vanishes to avoid arrest, leaving his wife Bhavani and children behind. This marks a turning point as he disappears underground to evade authorities.

Bhavani joins the ranks of day laborers to support her family after Chellappan's disappearance. She develops a relationship with Gopalan, a fellow laborer, leading to a complex emotional situation. She eventually sells their house and moves to a new location, with her pregnancy and her children missing Chellappan deeply.

Chellappan is sheltered by a sympathetic working-class family under the alias 'Prabhakaran.' He becomes a minor celebrity among the local Communist sympathizers, experiencing warmth and respect. During this time, Parvathy, the daughter of his hosts, secretly desires to marry him, though he is unaware of her feelings.

Realizing his neglect, Chellappan returns to his village incognito, only to discover that Bhavani has sold their house, moved in with Gopalan, and is pregnant. Filled with remorse, Chellappan blames himself for the changed circumstances and begins a period of reflection.

Chellappan witnesses protests outside a factory against the mill owner, who is accused of kidnapping Paulose's daughter. During a clash with goons hired by the factory, Chellappan joins the fight, injuring the goons and impressing locals like Hamza, a tea stall owner. His bravery earns him recognition in the community.

After his brave act against the goons, Chellappan's reputation among the Communist organizers grows, and he becomes a recognized figure. Parvathy, who admires him, is heartbroken when he refuses her romantic advances, seeing him as having changed into a different person driven by new convictions.

Chellappan visits his estranged wife Bhavani, now with a newborn. He learns that his daughter Kumari has died of jaundice. In a moment of tenderness, he blesses his son Kuttappan, urging him to study and succeed, symbolizing a moment of parental love and reconciliation.

Chellappan is arrested for the murder of the factory owner and confesses fully to the crime. His act of accepting blame leads to a trial where he is sentenced to death. His arrest marks the tragic culmination of his sacrifices and ideological struggle.

Chellappan is executed by hanging, a poignant moment captured as Bhavani, Gopalan, and others mourn him helplessly. His death unites his loved ones in grief, and the scene shows the two mounds outside their house—one for Chellappan and a smaller one for Kumari—symbolizing loss and remembrance.
