Angel Has Fallen (2019) Timeline Explained – Every Event in Order

Mike Banning is framed because Wade Jennings orchestrated the attack to kill President Trumbull and then pin the assassination attempt on Banning. Jennings wanted the President dead to trigger a war with Russia, which he could profit from through his private military company Salient Global. Banning was chosen as the fall guy because he was the only agent who survived the attack, making him the perfect suspect.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Jennings hosts Banning at his military facility for intensive training, giving him insider knowledge of Banning's movements and access to plant evidence.

Jennings plants Banning's DNA at the crime scene by using equipment from their training sessions, where Banning had handled weapons and gear. He also transfers $10 million into Banning's account from a Russian bank to create a financial motive, making it appear Banning was paid by foreign agents to carry out the attack.

Foreshadowing: Banning trains extensively at Jennings' facility, where Jennings would have access to Banning's DNA and personal information.

Kirby helps Jennings because they share the same goal: retaliating against Russia for what they believe was Russia's involvement in the attack on President Trumbull. Kirby sees Jennings as a way to wage war against Russia without going through official channels, while Jennings uses Kirby's political power to advance his own agenda.

Foreshadowing: Once sworn in as Acting President, Kirby immediately accuses Banning of the attack and begins publicly pushing for a aggressive response.

Jennings maintains recorded evidence of Kirby's collusion and coordination in the conspiracy. This "insurance policy" ensures that if Jennings is exposed or captured, he can expose Kirby's treason and bring him down as well, preventing Kirby from turning against Jennings.

Foreshadowing: After Trumbull awakens and the conspiracy unravels, Jennings' insurance policy is mentioned as a tool to bring Kirby to justice.

Despite their complicated relationship, Clay Banning helps his son because Jennings' men are hunting them both. Clay uses explosives to kill the approaching henchmen, protecting Mike and later intervening to save Leah and their daughter from being captured. This forces Clay and Mike to work together as a family against the common threat.

Foreshadowing: Banning goes to his father's remote cabin in the woods, a place where he was previously estranged from Clay.

Thompson begins doubting Banning's guilt when she discovers the bodies of Jennings' men around Clay's cabin. If Banning were truly guilty and on the run, there would be no need for others to be hunting him. The presence of dead henchmen, combined with the sophistication of the attack, leads her to suspect a larger conspiracy.

Foreshadowing: Thompson finds the bodies at the cabin, which contradicts the narrative that Banning is working alone.

After being captured at the hospital, Banning is freed when President Trumbull awakens and vouches for him. Jennings then triggers an explosion in the Intensive Care Unit to create chaos and kill Trumbull. In the ensuing battle, Banning confronts Jennings in hand-to-hand combat and fatally stabs him, ending the conspiracy.

Foreshadowing: Jennings' escalating violence at the hospital shows his desperation as his plan unravels.

Once Trumbull awakens from his coma, he quickly pieces together the conspiracy. He realizes that Kirby became Acting President too quickly and suspiciously, and that Banning was the only agent who fought to protect him during the attack. Trumbull's trust in Banning, combined with the evidence Thompson has gathered, leads him to immediately order Banning's release.

Foreshadowing: Banning was the sole protector who fought desperately to save Trumbull during the drone attack, proving his loyalty.

Despite his guilt over failing to protect Trumbull and his hidden health issues (migraines, insomnia, back pain), Banning is offered the Director position by Trumbull as a gesture of forgiveness and trust. Trumbull recognizes Banning's loyalty, skills, and the personal burden he carries. Banning accepts, moving from field agent to leadership.

Foreshadowing: Banning was recommended to become Director earlier in the film, before the conspiracy unfolded.

Jennings wants Trumbull dead to trigger a war with Russia. He believes the U.S. needs to retaliate aggressively against Russia for what Jennings claims was their involvement in the attack. A war would benefit his private military company Salient Global financially and position Jennings as a war hero with significant political influence.

Foreshadowing: Jennings frames the attack as a Russian operation to justify military retaliation.

The attackers are agents who participated in Banning's training at Jennings' facility. Jennings used his position as CEO of Salient Global to send these trained agents on a covert mission to kill Banning during the transport to detention. This proves Jennings' involvement and that the frame job was orchestrated from inside Banning's circle.

Foreshadowing: Banning trained at Jennings' military facility, where Jennings has access to loyal operatives.
