To impress her, he aims for a position in the Secret Service, but his plans unravel when he faces the disheartening judgment of Carol Finnerty, a former college peer portrayed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, who deems him unfit due to his perceived lack of respect for authority.

In a bid to shield the truth from Emily about his failed interview, Cale enjoins her on a tour of the White House. Chaos ensues as a mercenary disguised as a janitor stealthily plants a bomb within a cart inside the rotunda of the Capitol, resulting in a catastrophic explosion that claims numerous lives and obliterates part of the building.

Amidst this turmoil, Raphelson fortuitously escapes harm and is taken to an underground command center alongside Finnerty.
