Raj Nandini Singh is born into a village ruled by powerful Zamindars. Her three brothers celebrate with a feast to honor the newborn. The brothers raise her as their own child, shaping her world around loyalty and the brothers' control.

An astrologer predicts that Nandini will bring happiness, but her marriage must be her own choice. The brothers fear this and confine her to the house, depriving her of outside life. She is educated at home while the outside world is kept at bay by threat of dire consequences.
