In this follow-up to the original story, local tycoon Vincent Brown Steve Railsback continues dumping a tanker full of chemicals into the sewers, a reckless act that keeps mutating a baby alligator into a colossal predator. When two Mexican fishermen are found dead, Detective David Hodges Joseph Bologna, a loner by choice, begins a stubborn investigation. A severed leg points the trail toward an alligator attack, a discovery that leads Hodges’s wife, Christine Hodges Dee Wallace, a university expert, and the coroner to connect the incidents. The town’s leaders—Mayor Anderson Bill Daily and Chief Speed Brock Peters—refuse to call off Brown’s lake party, forcing Hodges to press them for action.
Hodges reluctantly enlists rookie officer Rich Harmon Woody Brown, and their initial attempt to take down the mutant gator falters, underscoring the creature’s size and wits. The hunt intensifies as professional alligator hunter Shai Hawkins enters the scene with his allies, while Brown’s men strike back, crippling Chief Speed’s car and injecting chaos into the town’s mood. Across town, Sheri Anderson Holly Gagnier and Harmon’s girlfriend work to disrupt Brown’s lake-side celebration, adding pressure to the escalating chase.
Brown’s party becomes a magnet for violence when the mayor is murdered on a Ferris wheel, dragging the town into a crisis point. The alligator heads toward the park, wrecking the festivities as chaos erupts. Hodges, Harmon, and Hawkins pursue the creature in a high-stakes sequence, only for the beast to overpower Hawkins and threaten the mission. The three fighters push forward, improvising a new plan as the surface world rages with fear and outrage.
With Christine’s help, Hodges and Harmon arm themselves for a deeper strike, slipping into the sewers to confront the beast at its lair. On the surface, Sheri Anderson and Harmon’s girlfriend strive to keep Brown’s party from spiraling completely out of control, while Brown’s deadly ambitions culminate in a brutal confrontation that leaves the surface drained and shaken. The final showdown sees Hodges and Harmon, armed with rocket launchers and a poison-assisted strategy, tracking the gator to its sewer nest. A near-miss from Harmon’s shot, Hodges’s precise strike to a vulnerable skull spot, and a delayed explosion finally threaten the creature’s life.
Emerging from the tunnels, the surviving trio is hailed as heroes, though the battle has left deep scars. Hodges, acknowledging the depth of their partnership, names Rich Harmon as his partner, signaling a fragile but earned bond forged in the fires of a town’s nightmare.
