Set in the vast Nevada Desert near Groom Lake, the film follows a chilling thread of murders and eerie encounters that unfold over two years, weaving a tense atmosphere through a traveling carnival and a string of confrontations with an otherworldly presence.
The opening sequence drops us into a nightmare: a woman is chased by an unseen creature across the heat-hazed sands, only to wake up shaken and wary. As night drifts over the desert, a couple, Traci and her boyfriend Gibson, push on toward Las Vegas, with Gibson endlessly talking about Area 51. To quiet him, Traci distractionally shifts the moment, but their drive takes a darker turn when Gibson’s attention proves costly: he vanishes after pulling over to deal with a blown tire. Traci searches in vain, finding only a bloodstained tire iron. She lights a cigarette, tries to leave, and soon crashes, becoming trapped by her seatbelt. Outside, the monster seizes the cigarette and uses the leaking fuel to ignite the car, trapping Traci in a deadly blaze.
Soon after, a string of brutal assaults erupts at a small carnival, all attributed to an alien presence that draws the attention of Dr. Cleo Browning. As the danger becomes clearer, Sheriff Sam Cash becomes involved, and Dr. Browning contemplates a plan to kill the creature with him. Their discussion is overheard by Roxanne, an animal-rights activist, and her boyfriend Albert, who see an opportunity to expose government secrecy through capturing the alien. Meanwhile, three carnival workers decide to capture the alien themselves and turn it into a sideshow oddity.
The two investigators—Cash and Browning—meet with the carnival’s possible informant, Cletus Matthew Christopher, who theorizes that the alien might be living in a cave high in the mountains. As this meeting unfolds, Roxanne makes a bold, reckless attempt to sabotage the sheriff’s tires, forcing Albert to act as lookout. She cannot cut the tires, and when she later discovers Albert’s body, fear drives her to scream; the alien, lurking nearby, claims another victim.
The next day, Browning and Cash venture into the desert to locate the alien’s lair. They uncover a tunnel system that serves as the creature’s home; Browning is lowered into the tunnel by a rope, and she discovers the alien’s young. She sends the child back up to Cash, hoping to shield it from danger. But the carnival workers ambush them, and they seize the alien’s offspring, forcing Cash to hand it over and reluctantly hurling him into the tunnel to confront the danger.
Escaping the trap, Browning and Cash head back to the carnival, interrupting the sideshow and reclaiming the alien child. They attempt to flee, but one of the carnival workers strikes a tire, leaving them stranded. The arrival of the Mother alien intensifies the confrontation as Browning fights back with resolve. Throughout the struggle, one of the carnies exchanges gunfire with Cash, wounding him, while Browning delivers a decisive strike that brings the creature to the ground. As Browning walks away, a carny asks if the alien is dead; she affirms, but in a brutal final twist, the creature lunges to kill the carny who bends over it.
In the end, the desert’s deadly secret remains unsettled, its victims a stark reminder of the dangers that lie beyond the carnival’s glittering lights and the quiet bravery of those who choose to stand against an unknown menace. The film lingers on a precarious balance between science, fear, and the urge to reveal what hides in the shadows of Groom Lake.
