In the 22nd century, humanity faces catastrophic impacts due to severe global warming. The polar ice caps have melted, resulting in flooded coastlines and a significant reduction in the human population.

Amidst the dystopian landscape, a new class of robots called 'Mecha' is created. These advanced humanoids are designed to imitate human emotions and thought processes, providing a semblance of companionship.

David, a prototype Mecha designed to resemble a human child, is created by the Cybertronics corporation in New York. He is uniquely programmed to exhibit love towards his human owners and is presented to employees Henry Swinton and his wife Monica for testing.

Monica initially fears David but eventually grows to love him when she activates his imprinting protocol. This irreversible connection causes David to develop strong feelings for Monica, treating her as his mother.

Martin, the Swintons' biological son, is cured of a rare illness and returns home, leading to a tense rivalry with David. Their sibling conflict escalates as Martin begins to assert his dominance over David.

During a tense moment, Martin tricks David into cutting a lock of Monica's hair, which horrifies their parents when discovered. This incident deepens the conflict between David and Martin, highlighting the challenges of their unusual dynamic.

At a pool party, a friend of Martin inadvertently activates David’s self-defense program, causing chaos as David panics and pulls Martin into the pool. Although Martin is saved, Henry grows increasingly fearful of David’s capabilities.

Fearful for their family's safety, Henry convinces Monica to return David to Cybertronics for destruction. Instead, Monica chooses to abandon David in a forest, leaving him and Teddy to navigate a dangerous world alone.

David is captured and taken to a Flesh Fair, an event where outdated Mecha are destroyed for entertainment. There, David pleads for his life, showcasing real emotions that resonate with the crowd and ultimately facilitates his escape.

David escapes with Gigolo Joe, a charming male Mecha who helps him evade capture while seeking to find the mythical Blue Fairy. David’s quest is driven by his desire to become a real boy and win Monica’s love.

In Rouge City, David and Joe consult a holographic entity named Dr. Know, seeking guidance for their quest. The information received guides them on their urgent journey toward the submerged ruins of New York City.

Upon reaching the submerged New York City, David meets his maker, Professor Hobby. Hobby reveals that David's journey was a test of his love, and that many other identical versions of him are being created, leaving David heartbroken and questioning his own uniqueness.

Overwhelmed by despair after learning of his duplicity, David attempts to end his own life. However, he is rescued by Joe, who encourages him to continue pursuing his dream of being loved by Monica.

In his quest, David discovers a submerged statue he believes to be the Blue Fairy. Unfortunately, he and Joe find themselves trapped under a collapsing attraction amidst an ice age that follows, forcing David to wait for thousands of years.

Millennia later, advanced Mecha find and revive David. They reconstruct Monica using DNA from her hair, allowing her to live for a single day. In their emotional reunion, Monica reassures David of her love before fading away, leaving him in a state of bittersweet joy.
