Late in the reign of Elizabeth I, the Spanish noble Don Juan de Maraña [Errol Flynn] is repatriated from London to Madrid after a diplomatic scandal born from his dalliance with the English fiancée of a Spanish nobleman. The Spanish ambassador in London, Count de Polan [Robert Warwick], an old family friend, writes to Queen Margaret [Viveca Lindfors], asking for a chance to rehabilitate Don Juan’s reputation at the Spanish court. He asks that she provide him a pathway back into favor, and in a gracious move the Queen grants the request. Don Juan is appointed as a fencing instructor at the Royal Spanish Academy, a role in which he proves himself both capable and popular, using his talents to win esteem among the court’s circles. While at court, he develops a quiet, stirring affection for the Queen, yet remains a loyal subject to her and to King Philip III, mindful of the delicate balance of duty, romance, and state.
A shadow falls over the reconciliation when the Machiavellian Duke de Lorca [Robert Douglas] reveals a treacherous scheme. Lorca intends to depose the monarchs, imprison Count de Polan, seize control of Spain, and drag the nation into war with England. Don Juan, backed by trusted allies at court, uncovers the plot and moves to stop it. The confrontation escalates into a dramatic duel that ends in Lorca’s defeat, and the conspiracy is laid bare, sparing Spain from catastrophe. In the aftermath, the Queen confesses her love for Don Juan, seeing the depth of his virtue and steadfastness. Yet he believes that happiness would come at too great a cost to the realm and its fragile balance, and he asks to leave the court. With heavy hearts, they part ways, and Don Juan sets off to continue his travels across Spain, his journey marked by duty fulfilled and a life redirected by love, honor, and the perilous politics of the era.
