Admiral

During the production of War and Peace at Mosfilm in 1964, an elderly Russian noblewoman is slated to appear as an extra. The film’s political commissar demands her dismissal because of her aristocratic lineage, but the director refuses to give in, insisting that she stay. This opening moment sets the stage for a story that shifts between a grand, behind-the-scenes drama of cinema and the brutal, defining events of a nation at war and in upheaval.

In 1916, the narrative follows Captain Alexander Kolchak, Konstantin Khabenskiy, as his ship mines the Baltic Sea. They are blocked by the German SMS Friedrich Carl, and in a tense gambit they lure the German vessel toward their mines, culminating in its sinking. The action moves to the Grand Duchy of Finland naval base, where Kolchak is promoted to rear admiral and introduces Anna Timiryova, the wife of his close friend Captain Sergei Timirev. Anna Timiryova, Elizaveta Boyarskaya, remains cool under pressure and longs to be with the Admiral. Sofya, Kolchak’s wife, offers to leave for Petrograd to save their marriage, but Kolchak is resolute about their bond. When Anna delivers a letter to him, he confesses that they can never meet, even as he professes his love.

Tsar Nicholas II personally elevates Kolchak to vice admiral and commander of the Black Sea Fleet at Sevastopol. After the February Revolution in 1917, Tsarist officers are disarmed and many are executed at Kronstadt; Sergei barely escapes with Anna. A tense confrontation aboard Kolchak’s flotilla unfolds as a group of enlisted men demand surrender. Kolchak orders his subordinates to obey and, in a symbolic act of defiance, throws his own sword into the harbour.

Kolchak is summoned by Alexander Kerensky and offered the position of Minister of Defense. Kolchak accepts on the condition that they restore old Imperial Army practices, but Kerensky refuses and offers him exile in the United States, supposedly to assist the Allies in a naval push on Constantinople. Soon after, Kolchak’s wife and son are rescued from their home in Crimea and whisked away to a British ship, just before Red Guards attack.

The story shifts to 1918, with Anna and Sergei traveling on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Anna reveals that Kolchak is assembling an anti-Bolshevik army in Omsk, and Sergei is dismayed when Anna declares she is leaving him to become a nurse in the Civil War. Kolchak responds to the Red Army’s advance toward Omsk by ordering an evacuation and seizing Irkutsk as the new capital of anti-communist Russia.

Anna is recognized by a White officer who informs Kolchak; they meet again, and he vows never to leave her. He explains that he has asked Sofya for a divorce. He proposes to Anna, but she asserts that there is no need for marriage. Eventually, the two attend the Divine Liturgy together, their bond deepening even as the war rages around them.

Meanwhile, Irkutsk sits under the nominal control of French General Maurice Janin and the Czechoslovak Legion. With their defenses crumbling, the Red Army offers a path to survival, and General Janin agrees to hand Kolchak over. Kolchak is arrested by the Czechs and handed to the Reds, a move that triggers a desperate rescue by reinforcements led by General Vladimir Kappel. The operation reaches Irkutsk just in time but ultimately fails. Kolchak is tried by the Irkutsk soviet and executed along the banks of the frozen Angara River, together with his former Prime Minister. His last words are, >Send word to my wife in Paris that I bless our son<.

Their bodies are dumped into an opening in the ice, then ritually prepared by the local Orthodox clergy for the Great Blessing of Waters on Theophany. The narrative then doubles back to the Mosfilm lot in 1964. It is revealed that Anna is the noblewoman who appears as an extra in War and Peace. As she watches a rehearsal for one of the film’s ballroom scenes, she recalls her first meeting with Kolchak and the dreams of a formal dance she was never able to share with her beloved. The film thus weaves a meditation on history, memory, love, and the power of cinema to shape truth.
