The whole story of A White, White Day (2019) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Police chief Ingimundur, whose wife died in a car accident, reluctantly undergoes grief counselling. He stays busy by constantly renovating a farm building for his daughter Elín’s family, and he sometimes looks after her daughter Salka. When Elín returns with some of her mother’s belongings, he is shocked to find a video that appears to record an affair she had with a man named Olgeir Olafsson.

He stakes out Olgeir’s home and even joins his football club. A sudden, bad storm blocks the roads, trapping him inside as weather cleanses the world outside. During a pixelated online therapy session, Ingimundur’s emotions boil over; he destroys the room, strikes two protesting colleagues, and locks them in their cells. In a moment of rage, he tries to push away his granddaughter, and then he abducts Olgeir, taking him at gunpoint to a grave he has dug. He demands the truth about the affair and what Olgeir thought of his wife. Olgeir complies, and Ingimundur erupts in fury before Olgeir manages to escape.

The following day, Olgeir confronts Ingimundur and stabs him, leaving Salka terrified. With a bleeding arm, Ingimundur steadies himself and carries the girl home through another white-out, apologising for his earlier harshness. As the storm subsides and the weight of grief and anger settles, he begins to acknowledge his pain. In a final, haunting moment, he envisions his wife undressing and smiling at him as he weeps, signaling a fragile turn toward acceptance and a deeper, quieter form of connection.

A White, White Day Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about A White, White Day (2019): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Ingimundur become obsessed with proving his wife had an affair?

Ingimundur's obsession stems from his inability to process his wife's sudden death. After finding a video that appears to show her with Olgeir, his grief transforms into a desperate need to understand what happened. Rather than accepting the loss, he fixates on uncovering the truth about the affair as a way to make sense of his wife's death and preserve some control over his shattered understanding of their marriage.

Foreshadowing: His reluctance in grief counselling sessions early on reveals his deep-seated anger and inability to confront his emotions directly.

  • ingimundur
  • olgeir
  • affair
  • grief
  • obsession
  • jealousy
Q2

What causes Ingimundur's violent breakdown during the storm?

Ingimundur's breakdown is triggered during an online therapy session when his suppressed grief and anger finally surface. The isolation of the storm amplifies his emotional state, and the pixelated, distant nature of the virtual session frustrates his inability to connect. He destroys the room and attacks colleagues because he can no longer contain the pain he has been repressing since his wife's death.

Foreshadowing: The counseling sessions have been building his frustration, showing his increasing irritability and inability to express grief healthily.

Q3

Why does Ingimundur kidnap Olgeir and take him to a grave?

After weeks of surveillance and obsessing over the affair, Ingimundur confronts Olgeir in a fit of rage. He takes him to a pre-dug grave to force a confession about the affair and to confront him face-to-face with the truth. The grave serves as a powerful symbol of death and finality, representing Ingimundur's obsession with the finality of his wife's betrayal and his own willingness to descend into darkness.

Foreshadowing: His earlier stakeouts and infiltration of Olgeir's football club show his escalating fixation and crossing of moral boundaries.

Q4

What does Olgeir reveal about the affair at the grave?

Olgeir admits to the affair and describes what he thought of Ingimundur's wife, confirming the betrayal Ingimundur feared. However, the exact details of what Olgeir reveals remain emotionally devastating for Ingimundur, who explodes in fury at the confirmation of his worst suspicions. This revelation provides the cathartic confrontation Ingimundur sought, but it brings no peace.

Foreshadowing: The video discovery earlier provides the foundation for this confrontation, though its contents are ambiguous.

Q5

Why does Ingimundur push away his granddaughter Salka before the kidnapping?

Ingimundur insults and pushes Salka away deliberately because he recognizes that his violent intentions and escalating behavior put her in danger. By pushing her away, he attempts to protect her from witnessing or becoming involved in the dangerous confrontation he is about to have with Olgeir. This moment shows that despite his breakdown, some paternal protective instincts remain.

Foreshadowing: His earlier caretaking of Salka demonstrates his deep familial bonds, making this rejection particularly out of character.

Q6

Why does Olgeir stab Ingimundur the day after the grave confrontation?

Olgeir stabs Ingimundur the following day because he confronts him again, likely seeking revenge for the previous night's kidnapping and intimidation at gunpoint. The confrontation escalates to violence when Olgeir attacks Ingimundur in front of the terrified Salka. This violent response shifts the story from Ingimundur's obsessive pursuit to immediate physical danger.

Foreshadowing: The tense confrontation at the grave, where Olgeir tries to flee, sets up this retaliatory attack.

  • revenge

Q7

What does Ingimundur's final vision of his wife signify?

The vision of his wife undressing and smiling at him represents Ingimundur's fragile step toward accepting his grief. Rather than seeing her as betrayed or lost, he remembers her with intimacy and love. This moment suggests he is beginning to reconcile with his memories, finding a quieter, more personal way to hold onto her rather than being consumed by anger and suspicion.

Foreshadowing: The entire film builds toward this acceptance, with the storm and violent outbursts representing the cleansing of his intense emotions.

  • acceptance
  • grief

Q8

Why does Ingimundur join Olgeir's football club?

Ingimundur joins Olgeir's local football club as part of his covert investigation into the alleged affair. By inserting himself into Olgeir's social world, he hopes to gather information and get closer to the truth. This infiltration demonstrates how his grief has corrupted his judgment and blurred the lines between his role as a police chief and his personal obsession.

Foreshadowing: His earlier decision to stake out Olgeir's home shows his growing fixation and willingness to cross boundaries.

Q9

What does the snowstorm in the film symbolize?

The overwhelming snowstorm mirrors Ingimundur's emotional state, cold, isolating, and chaotic. As the roads block out the outside world, it creates a contained stage for his internal breakdown to play out. The storm also acts as a cleansing force, with the white landscape representing both death and a kind of emotional purge that eventually leads to his partial healing.

Foreshadowing: The film's title 'A White, White Day' itself hints at the pervasive whiteness and snow that dominates the visual and emotional landscape.

Q10

Why is Salka important to Ingimundur's character arc?

Salka represents Ingimundur's remaining capacity for love and connection amid his grief-fueled obsession. His attempt to push her away to protect her, and later his act of carrying her home through the white-out while bleeding, shows his residual humanity. Her presence forces him to confront the damage his behavior has caused and ultimately helps anchor him to something beyond his pain.

Foreshadowing: His initial role as her caretaker establishes this bond before his breakdown tests it.

Q11

Why does Ingimundur obsessively renovate the farm building after his wife's death?

Ingimundur throws himself into renovating the farm building as a physical outlet for his grief. The demanding work keeps him busy and prevents him from sitting with his emotions. This project represents his attempt to maintain purpose and responsibility, building something for his daughter's family, when his personal world has been shattered by loss.

Foreshadowing: His immediate engagement with physical labor after the death shows his pattern of avoiding emotional processing.

Q12

Why does Ingimundur attack his colleagues at the police station?

Ingimundur attacks two protesting colleagues during his breakdown because his emotional control has completely collapsed under the weight of grief and obsession. The pent-up anger from his wife's death, combined with the frustration of the online therapy session, erupts into violence. He then locks them in cells, abusing his position as police chief, showing how completely his judgment has deteriorated.

Foreshadowing: His earlier resistance to grief counselling and growing irritability foreshadow this loss of control.

Q13

What happens to Salka when Olgeir stabs Ingimundur?

Salka witnesses Olgeir stabbing Ingimundur, leaving her terrified by the violence she sees. Despite being wounded himself, Ingimundur must protect her and carry her to safety through the continuing snowstorm. This moment forces him to shift from his obsessive grief to immediate concern for her welfare, marking a turning point in his character.

Foreshadowing: His earlier push-away of Salka makes this protective act more meaningful as he reverses his harmful behavior.
