The Black Monk

Andrey Kovrin, a young doctor of philosophy, visits the estate of his former guardian, Yegor Pesotsky, in hopes of restoring his troubled mind. As he reconnects with Yegor’s life’s work, the estate’s slow rhythm and its orchard—a vast tapestry of cherry, pear, and apple trees—draw him deeper into a world where memory, duty, and desire collide. Kovrin re-establishes a bond with Yegor’s daughter, Tanya Pesotskaya, Tatyana Drubich, who has blossomed into a striking, thoughtful woman. The reunion is charged with promise; Yegor, who loves the land and its future, views Kovrin as the rightful heir to the estate and lends his blessing to their engagement.

During a quiet walk through the garden, Kovrin is visited by a mysterious vision: a black monk that seems to rise from a whirlwind, a figure he only vaguely recalls from an old legend. The apparition returns, speaking with unsettling certainty, telling Kovrin that he is uniquely gifted and destined for greatness. This haunting encounter fills him with a buoyant sense of purpose, and his renewed vigor is clearly evident to the Pesotsky family, who watch with a mix of awe and worry as the old beliefs about fate and genius begin to reassert themselves in his life.

Yet Tanya’s unease grows as she witnesses him speaking to an empty chair, a sign she interprets as a dangerous sign of illness rather than imagination. Years pass, and Kovrin’s life takes a harsher turn. Now gravely ill with tuberculosis, he lives in Crimea with an older woman who serves as his caretaker. A bitter letter from Tanya arrives, informing him of her father’s death, the sale of the beloved estate, and the steady decline of the orchard he once nourished. She blames him for the ruin and wishes him an early death, a message that cuts through his already frail body and wounds his fading spirit. The combination of physical decay and crushed hope sends him into a deep, exhausting delirium, punctuated by a violent coughing fit and another stark vision of the monk.

From the distant horizon over the Black Sea, the monk returns for a final reckoning, and Kovrin’s mind teeters on the edge of collapse. In his last hours, he imagines himself back at the Pesotsky estate, pursued by a colossal whirlwind that seems to swallow the dreams he once chased. He collapses on the doorstep of the manor, and the swirling wind—both symbol and force—consumes him and the life he sought to claim, sealing his fate as the estate and its memories fade into history.
