A Serious Man

In the late summer of 1967, a modest Minnesota suburb becomes the backdrop for a quietly unsettling portrait of a man whose world begins to unravel. Larry Gopnik, a physics professor at a small liberal‑arts college, wakes each day to the familiar rituals of academia and family, yet the foundations of his life start to shift when his wife announces she is leaving. As Larry attempts to maintain the semblance of normalcy, the arrival of his unemployed brother, Arthur, adds a chaotic layer of intrusion and dependence that further blurs the boundaries between private and professional.

The family’s dynamic, already strained, grows more complicated as their teenage son, Danny, drifts into a period of rebellion, while their daughter, whose name remains unspoken, turns to petty theft as a misguided outlet for frustration. These personal crises unfold against the larger currents of the era—social unrest, the looming Vietnam conflict, and a cultural landscape saturated with new ideas and old expectations.
